Street name

From the Gay Village Category: "...contains a number of gay lodgings, B&B's, bars, clubs and pubs, restaurants, cafés and other related gay businesses." Does Hawthorne qualify as a Gay Village? Viciousalloy 03:49, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

I live on Hawthorne, and although there are a lot of LGBTs there, they are pretty well integrated with everyone else. I can't think of a single gay bar, club, or restaurant on the street. Nearby Division St. does have a lesbian club.

European Feel?

As a European living in this neighborhood, I continue to wonder what is meant by "European feel"? Is this American shorthand for "mixed residential/commericial district with considerable pedestrian traffic"? If so, fair enough :-) VenusianCat 18:18, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

Hawthorne Heights

I don't think it's relevant to include a reference to the band Hawthorne Heights in the Trivia section. As far as I can tell, the band's name is not a reference to the Hawthorne district of Portland.

(excuse me for being off-topic, but...) Hey, that's Bruno by Christopher Baldwin! Cool. The character Bruno lives in Portland, and Baldwin uses photos of several northwest locations, including Portland and Olympia, Washington, as sources for the backgrounds in his work. Duplicate entries

It might be all well and good to have a section just for Hawthorne, but shouldn't this be merged with the Sunnyside neighborhood? Bdag 00:34, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

The problem is that there are at least 2 neighborhoods this would need to be merged into: Sunnyside (north of Hawthorne Blvd) and Richmond (south of Hawthorne Blvd). Portland's ONI didn't divide up the city into official neighborhoods in a way that in all cases maps on very well to people's understanding of areas of the city, and this is one case of that. I'd suggest having all three pages (Sunnyside, Richmond, and Hawthorne) — but editing Sunnyside to remove the claim there that Sunnyside and Hawthorne are equivalent terms. --ScottMainwaring 02:30, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

I do agree that there is a lot of overlap, but I think wiki is big enough for a dedicated article. I would argue that it iis the exception to the rule; I don't think we need articles on Burnside, Broadway, or Stark Streets. Cacophony 07:30, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

I agree also that this loosely defined stretch of Hawthorne Blvd. merits a dedicated article. It may not be an officially sanctioned neighborhood, being a border street of both Sunnyside and Richmond, but it is certainly a destination for visitors to Portland. If necessary, why not add an explanation? I would suggest editing the title to "Hawthorne Blvd. Portland Oregon" I can think of many similar locations in other cities. Attractions, not necessarily districts. Newberry Street. Rodeo Drive. Etc. ScottGPDX 06:29, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
