Photos
[edit]Anyone have any recent/current photos of Haverhill? Images from the early 1900s are wonderful, but they are not representative of the look of the city today and it would be nice to see some contemporary images here as well. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.34.169.53 (talk) 03:31, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
POV
[edit]One should not say, "Haverhill is extremely poor," as the article states. Even though it may be correct, it represents an obvious non-neutral point of view. Instead, it should state something like; "According to the 2000 census, 99 percent of the residents' income is below the poverty level..." --24.34.169.53 03:31, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
Government
[edit]Some of the information about Mayor Fiorentini sounds like it was written by a mayors office staffer. Rbcwa (talk) 14:40, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
- I agree. I nuked it. Fletcher (talk) 23:21, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
"Notable" Residents
[edit]A number of unregistered users have been adding names to the Notable Residents list which may be pranking, or may be notable people locally (hence no Wikipedia article on them). I have deleted the names of anyone without either a Wikipedia article or other verifiability. If anyone feels these people are worthy of inclusion, please add their name with a citation.THD3 (talk) 20:38, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
Notable Residents
[edit]Hi, I added Seth Romatelli to Notable residents and he was deleted. I am a huge fan of his and feel that he should be included. I'll start a wiki page on him today. I am re-adding him to notable residents. Please do not delete him from Notable Residents. Thanks! Rohurley (talk) 22:35, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
- Well, we need a solution to the notable resident problem. Eventually this list could grow longer than WP. How many people are there in Haverhill making over, say, 100,000? I don't think we should be listing notable people in the article. This is not a popularity contest. We don't take a vote on everyone in Haverhill in order to construct a grease list and then force the bottom of the list to leave the country. And what about New York City? I think you see the problem, but it must be faced in most of the articles for Essex County, which are some of the worst I have ever seen. We do have a category section of WP. Most of you are not aware of it; I was not for a long time. At some point I will be facing the problem, as I am working on the articles for Essex Country. I am going to take the stand that notables go in the categories but not the articles. I'm not ready yet. I need to do more research on WP policy. If it goes my way, all these dumb lists will be coming out; they are not encyclopedic. So, I would not get too attached to the notability vote if I were you.Dave (talk) 15:28, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
Issues
[edit]This article is tagged as being "Written like a travel guide." I have reviewed the Wikipedia description of what it means to be like a travel guide, and this article does not seem to fit.
If anyone else agrees with me, I think they should go ahead and remove the tag. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.231.64.93 (talk) 19:33, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
- Not so fast, my friend. You suggest someone else do what you won't do: "Let's you and him fight", as my father used to say. That isn't yankee ethic. You didn't even sign your post. To repeat a saying one used to hear in the rural south, "where are you from boy?" If you had to be asked the question it was already too late for you in that part of the country. On behalf of the article let me say this. Those tags are on there for a reason. We aren't passing off bad quality as good. When the reason has been totally and fairly addressed, then they can come off, and not before. As far as I'm concerned it still sells more than it informs. Thanks.Dave (talk) 15:07, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
- I've taken the liberty of not only removing the 'travel guide' tag, but also the 'trivia' tag. I removed the entire section on urban renewal, it appeared that the original author had a sever anti-gentrification bias. I took the objective points discussed with regards to the architecture and moved them into the 20th century history section - which I newly created as well. The original author of the the Urban Renewal section - though lamenting the loss of significant urban structures, also completely neglected to note the complete destruction of a ten acre section of the downtown as a result of the great fire of 1882. The line Also removed were the subjective critiques of the concept of urban renewal in which it was referred to as 'misguided' and 'discredited'.
- This article still needs a lot of work, but this is a a number of great steps in the right direction. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Zencycle (talk • contribs) 21:42, 8 November 2010 (UTC)

List of trivia
[edit]References to Haverhill
- 21 Grams
- John Belleairs, various stories.
- Jack Kerouac, passing reference in On the Road
- Stephen King, "The Cell."
- H. P. Lovecraft, "Dreams of the Witch House" and minor references in other stories.
- The West Wing Episode #154 mention of train derailment between Haverhill, MA and Exeter, NH (although they mispronounced how "Haverhill" is properly pronounced - they used the phonetic "Hay-Ver-Hill", rather than the correct "Hay-vrill").
- Kurt Vonnegut, "Mother Night."
- John Irving, "The World According to Garp."
In response to one of the tags at the top I removed this trivia section. Over the years, WP has come down against such lists. I would certainly agree. This is not a TV game show.Dave (talk) 14:58, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
References, please
[edit]You are not putting in references for this material. This is not an opinion poll; just because you can type and access WP does not give you the priviledge of presenting your opinions to the world. Keep them to yourselves. We want authoritative information, and those words mean, someone credible has offered it. That wouldn't be you. We want to know who. Dave (talk) 15:35, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
Origin of name?
[edit]I have a question - where did this town get its name from? Does anyone know the history of its founding? I was born in Haverhill, Suffolk, England - a little town with some history. Does Haverhill Massachussetts share its name because of a link with people who came from Haverhill, Suffolk, England? By the way, it's hard to do four tildes when your keyboard doesn't have the tilde character on it! Viragored (talk) 07:50, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
Downeaster
[edit]The article states that the conductors of the Downeaster line regularly refer to it as "the jewel in the crown of the Merrimack valley". I take the train twice a week and have never heard it called that. I asked one of the regulars that takes it every day, and apparently there's a different crew on Friday nights, of which one guy calls it that. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.94.31.206 (talk) 12:24, 2 March 2015 (UTC)

Haverhill’s Sister City
[edit]Hi, I have added Haverhill, Suffolk, as one of Haverhill, Massachusetts’ sister city, because Haverhill, Massachusetts and Haverhill, Suffolk have a connection, the reason why Haverhill, Massachusetts is named Haverhill because of its fellow sister city in England. I’m not sure what the current status of the other sister cities, would like to see an updated list about them. 174.233.1.96 (talk) 05:21, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
