This school is not a university according to the Dutch law, but an HBO (higher professional school), so I removed the category link. The requirement of the category with the Dutch universities is: There are two kinds of institutions of higher education in The Netherlands: universities (universiteiten) and schools for professional education (HBO's or hogescholen). This category contains a list of the universities.--145.107.0.131 14:56, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Universities of Applied Science are indeed professional education schools; this is the reason the school is known under the name Hanzehogeschool in Dutch. You will find several other such universities of applied science throughout the Netherlands, though they may not be called universiteit in Dutch for the reason you named. While the description of the school may be correct in English, it is misleading to categorize it under "universities", and hence this category has been removed. — Stimpy talk 14:59, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I always understood that Universities in the English-speaking world were institutions that are allowed to grant PhD-degrees. Since Hogescholen are not, should the word "university" in the title not be changed to "polytechnic"?Keilmesser (talk) 13:15, 15 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your question is based on incorrect information. Many universities in the English-speaking world are not allowed to grant PhD-degrees. gidonb (talk) 21:53, 24 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed Groningen from the name as there is no other Hanze University of Applied Sciences elsewhere and the name without "Groningen" is commonly used (for example: http://www.eurogates.nl/news/a/3622/welcoming-day-hanze-uas-groningen/). gidonb (talk) 17:57, 24 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
