In "Deutsche Verlustliste" (preussische Verlustliste Nr. 103, Dec 16th, 1914, p. 3672 - i.e. official casualty list) is recorded:
"[Reserve-Feldartillerie-Regiment Nr. 22, Cassel, Erfurt, 2. Batterie] Leutnant der Reserve Hans ROTHFELS - Cassel - durch Sturz mit dem Pferde verletzt 21.11.14" (injured by fall off horse)
(RFAR 22 belonged to 22nd Res. Division, which was placed in Aisne region (Nouvron near Soissons) from mid/end-Sept. 1914 to Oct. 1915 - "Battle of the Marne" is no correct designation, as that battle took place in the beginning of Sept. 1914).
Notice that the designation "junior officer" for Hans Rothfels is slightly misleading, in German the term for the rank he hold was "Leutnant der Reserve" (= reserve officer). That is to say, he served, presumably, after "Abitur", around 1909/10, as "Einjaehrig-Freiwilliger" (= one-year-volunteer), a possibility given to higher educated and well-to-do-people, preplanned for filling the german army's reserve officer corps. Then he served (at peacetime, before ww-1 broke out) some exercises, was promoted to "Gefreiter", "Unteroffizier", and, that is to presume, was given the rank of "Lt.d.Res." after the beginning of ww-1 in August. 6th November 2008, 11.04 GMT.
