Quote: "Some claim that Morgenthau is the founder of International relations as an independent discipline. Before him, it was studied under history, political thought or international law."

This is simply based in nothing more than an American view of the subject. The first department of IR (amongst English-speaking nations) was set up at the University of Wales in the earliest years of the 20th century, whilst the subject was given an endowed Chair at The London School of Economics and Political Science by 1904.
