- Painter belonging to the Late Gothic. [1]
- Had large workshop in Augsburg. [1]
- His sons Hans Holbein the Younger and Ambrosius Holbein worked there. [1]
- By 1514 the shop had shut down. [1]
- Hans the Elder then moved to Issenheim, possibly around 1517. [1]
- Chief work is an altar piece representing Saint Sebastian (1515/1517). [1]
- Another work is Death of the Virgin, signed and dated 1496. [1]
- Also left a sketchbook, containing mostly portraits, including a double portrait of Hans the Younger and Ambrosius. [1]
