 – Links that violated WP:EL, WP:SPAM and/or WP:COI were removed over 7 years ago.

After viewing the items under External Links, I don't understand why any of them needs to be there. If we include whatever is relevant, there's about a hundred I could add for balance. For each link, what purpose does it serve the article? and is it the best or a balanced representation of what is available? My answers to those questions caused me to want to remove the whole section. Its presence just attracts self-servers and directory compilers. What do others think about the external links section and/or the worthiness of any of the links that are there? AuntySue 11:16, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

Linkspam is a real problem and you've summed up the external links page fairly well however, to keep on top of it (especially a bulk removal), requires someone to take an ongoing interest in a page and actively monitor any future additions.

Personally, I'd toss a coin on http://www.craftbits.com as it asks for nothing but seems to offer a lot in return, (although there should be a better subpage for it) but other than that I think they should all go, especially the charity link as it offers nothing to support the main article. — Graibeard 00:54, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

Has anyone ever itemised the criteria for external links that are desired? I imagine it would include: international relevance, provides supplementary reference material, not a club or chat or seller unless that is what the article is about, not a personal page or blog, etc. - AuntySue 11:59, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

 – Unsourced arts and crafts merged to handicrafts after 7-year failure to provide sources; broader merge incl. craft, useful arts, etc. still an open question, but should be raised in a new thread.

I have proposed the merge because the "Arts and crafts" article fails to distinguish between Handicraft "and everything else". Also: If you want "Handicraft" to define what "Arts and crafts" are, then also rename:

• The category
• The implementation in Wikipedia:Browse

I've just started a discussion on merging at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject Arts. There I suggested merging this article along with handicraft, craft and useful arts into the article Applied arts. Handicrafts and 'Arts and Crafts' should be merged.....they fall under the same category.People looking for handicrafts would find proper infomation. - User

"Arts and crafts" mostly relates to those crafts which are made by childs for improvement of skills or by adults as a hobby or for limited use, but handcrafts are of much higher artistic level. Even in my language (Persian) we have two completely different words for these two. If you see the same is applicable for other languages too. so my suggestion is to don't merge them. --Wayiran (talk) 01:12, 24 May 2010 (UTC)

• Zero sources, much less any reliable ones have been provided for any such distinction [as someone alleged, between handicrafts meaning "professional" and arts and crafts meaning "amateur or childrens'"], or for anything in either of these wanna-be articles at all. Consequently, the entire arts and crafts page was a clear violation of WP:Verifiability policy, and WP:POVFORK. Over seven years have been provided for people to bring these articles within Wikipedia policy, and this has not happened. I have therefore done what clearly had to be done, and merged arts and crafts into handicrafts. Not the other way around, because Arts and Crafts is a formal art movement, and both readers and editors have been getting confused. One consequence of that confusion is that arts and crafts now redirects to arts and crafts (disambiguation), and needs to always do so, because about half the incoming links for arts and crafts really want the movement, and half want handicrafts. Because Americans often use "arts and crafts" to mean "handicrafts", but those who know art have no other term for "Arts and Crafts", the movement, but may be intending to refer to it, there is no solution but to leave arts and crafts and arts & crafts as redirects to the disambiguation page, so that DabSolver bot makes them be more explicit in their intended link. — SMcCandlish  Talk⇒ ɖ^⊝כ^⊙þ Contrib. 02:26, 16 January 2013 (UTC)
