Existence?

[edit]

I created this page yesterday, but I now have doubts a "Handbook of 809" even exists, as the term is only ever used by Ramírez-Weaver, since 2008. Most scholars[1] seem to treat the Carolingian collection of astronomical texts just on the basis of enumerating the individual texts; the "Handbook" hypothesis seems to be Ramírez-Weaver's thesis that some sort of concerted "Christianisation" effort was going on. I have no idea if this is correct, I am relying blindly on the literature I can find on google books. So, more research is needed here, and help would be appreciated. --dab (𒁳) 05:39, 3 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

On further reflection, I think it would make sense to widen the topic of this article into "Carolingian astronomy", or "early medieval astronomy", and given a coherent account of the entire period. So far we do not have an article on "western astronomy in the Middle Ages" at all, the best we have is an article section here. --dab (𒁳) 06:14, 3 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
