There is no Hamilton Watch Company today
The first sentence has just been changed to "The Hamilton Watch Company is a Swiss watch company based in Bienne, Switzerland." The problem I have with this is that there is no Hamilton Watch Company, Swiss or otherwise, today. Hamilton Watch today is a brand, marketed by Swatch. On its own it would not be notable enough for its own article. This article is mostly about The Hamilton Watch Company, which ceased to exist in 1974. Kendall-K1 (talk) 15:05, 24 June 2016 (UTC)
- The company currently exists, with its name. I understand what you are saying, however the watch is manufactured by Swatch and then sold under the Hamilton Watch Company name, which is a legal company in Switzerland. If you look at other Swatch brands such as Tissot, Mido (watch), Certina, Longines, Rado, and Omega SA, just to name a few, you will see that they are referred to in the present tense, while also going into detail about their pasts. BALL Watch Company is an interesting case, as it is an American Company based in Switzerland (both are stated in the lead and throughout the article). Waltham Watch Company is a unique case as it was refounded years later, and it has a new article with the new company name, Waltham International. The confusing part about reverting it back to the way it was is that the article reads as though the company does not exist anymore, when in fact it does. Even the article states this, and the infobox shows its parent company as Swatch, which is accurate and correct. I hope this information with the other pages informs you as to why I rewrote the lead. - I just noticed you were the one to have originally changed the text [1], so that may be your hesitance to change it back! Please let me know if you still have concerns now that I've drawn out my reasoning. Thanks, Garchy (talk) 15:16, 24 June 2016 (UTC)
- Do you have a source that says there is still a Hamilton Watch Company? Please cite it. Also, it's considered polite when you are reverted to leave the text as is until there is consensus to change it. Kendall-K1 (talk) 16:21, 24 June 2016 (UTC)
- The company is listed as Hamilton International Ltd, which is a company of the Swatch Group, directly descended from the Hamilton Watch Company. If you read within the article you will find plenty of sources within citing the acquisition by SSIH, and the merger into the current The Swatch Group, and I just added one. I am very familiar with WP:3RR as a rollbacker, hence why I reverted your good faith revert of my edit, and substantiated it with proper reasoning. I'll await comments from others, if they should come in. Garchy (talk) 18:01, 24 June 2016 (UTC)
Edit war aside, I tend to agree with Kendall-K1. The article should probably be retitled to something like Hamilton (watch company). The intro to the article struggles to get around to the fact that it's now a brand and not a company per se. Many watch brands have these illustrious backstories -- that nevertheless take a back seat to their current situation as a brand rather than a company.
