Pepi Shan

[edit]

Based on its continuing use in Croatian on Wikipedia and elsewhere, this is apparently an old name for Kwanmo. Despite its ubiquity in 19th century English sources, including descriptions and maps clear enough to show its identity with the Hamgyongs, I can't find any etymology (I'd assume a mangled form of Chinese 白北山, Pai-pei Shan, "White Northern Mountain(s)", but can't be sure) or even any source that directly states "the Hamgyong Mountains, formerly known as the Pepi Shan". It's like the name dropped off the face of the earth, along with Mounts "Hien-fung" and "Tao-kwang", once people actually began to speak Korean instead of just reading Hanja in Chinese. — LlywelynII 01:21, 12 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
