Manifest errors in section 'De penitentia'
[edit]The 'De penitentia' section contains a number of errors/misleading claims:
- 1) Paenitentiale is the title this work more commonly goes by among scholars.
- 2) It consists of six books, not five; though the last one (the so-called Paenitentiale Pseudo-Romanum) was probably not compiled by Halitgar himself.
- 3) The following sentence is misleading: "This work and the two attributed to Hrabanus Maurus were considered to supersede those written before, and were very influential, particularly in pre-Norman England." There is currently no evidence that the penitentials of Hrabanus Maurus were known in pre-Conquest England. On the other hand, it is true that Halitgar's was known there, and was even translated into the native language (Old English).
- 4) Collectio Acheriana should read Collectio Dacheriana. And there is not (nor has there ever been, to my knowledge) any doubt that this large and important collection was used by Halitgar.
- 5) The canons of Elvira are not, strictly speaking, a collection (collectio).
- 6) Halitgar did not use (indeed could not have used) the Collectio quadripartita as a source. Rather, the author of the Quadripartita used Halitgar as a source.
