[edit]The hotel was the tallest in Coney Island. Small illustration - link: http://www.art.com/asp/sp-asp/_/pd--10393844/sp--A/Crowded_Beach_Half_Moon_Hotel_Coney_Island_New_York_City.htm
This, from the New York Times, September 1, 1991, gives some perspective on the Half Moon Hotel:
"The Half Moon was built in the 1920's to help Coney Island compete with Atlantic City, but it is remembered today as the site of Abe (Kid Twist) Reles's mysterious fatal six-story fall, despite a police guard, on the eve of his scheduled testimony in 1941 against Murder Inc."
Reles's death signified the reach that organized crime had into the police department - he was guarded by six police dectectives. There was little doubt that Reles was defenestrated. Link to photo - http://www.nyu.edu/greyart/exhibits/police/html/abe.html
