Where is the "List of Characters" link?

When viewing a page about any series with a story line I expect to find a simple and easy link to the characters of the series, games or not. Where is the link to the main article of the Half Life 2 characters? I'm struggling to find it, and am now going to resort to google. Wikipedia should not be frustrating to navigate. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.137.46.43 (talk) 20:02, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Half Life stopped to support NVIDIA??

There are rumours that Valve purposefully stopped to support NVIDIA graphics chipset?? I have an NVIDIA 7400 and Half Life 2, Episode 1 ... recently stopped working, apparently after a Steam online update. When you google the error message "failed to lock vertex buffer in CMeshDX8::LockVertexBuffer" you find over 1200 hits - NVIDIA users world wide experience the same problems. There was a blog message from a Valve staff member saying they cant do anything about it.

Do you guys know more about it? Are there NVIDIA users where HL2 still works?

Mine works. It sounds like another issue with source caused by "paged pool memory low" it can be solved by a registry fix (google it)

One of the common reasons for articles that list and describe objects is that it's simply not encyclopedic, and in the context of the game article, it goes out of bounds of what Wikipedia is. You have to remember that game articles in Wikipedia are not game guides.--BirdKr 20:00, 7 October 2007 (UTC)

Soundtrack Remixes

Compared HL1 Soundtrack with HL2 Soundtrack but I just can't hear anything that differs HL2 Track 32 from HL1 Track 2. Page states that HL2 32 is a remix but it sound exaclty like HL1 2 where is the difference? HL2 Tracks 34, 41 & 42 are for sure Remixes as they differ very clear.

I can't hear any difference between HL2 track 32 and HL1 track 2 either. I also compared the waveforms, they looked virtually identical. I removed track 32 from the remix list until someone can prove it's a remix. 217.149.206.138 (talk) —Preceding comment was added at 19:34, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Shouldn't there be information about the current boxed releases down there? The most recent boxed version of HL2 no longer includes CS:S, but comes with deathmatch instead.

"Osama Bin Leaker"

'The game had been leaked by a German hacker named Axel G., also known as "Osama Bin Leaker".'

I followed HL2s development, leak and release quite closely and I've never heard of him being referred to as Osama Bin Leaker. I’m assuming this is vandalism unless someone thinks otherwise... Xep 21:58, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

Yeah I never heard that term before, sounds like vandalism as well. --86.27.63.75 (talk) 15:15, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

1984 and City 17

Has anyone else noticed that City 17 and Airstrip One are very alike? Cameras everywhere, watching your every move, Dr. Breen (or Big Brother) always everywhere on giant screen, etc. Should this be in the article, City 17's article, or not at all? Thanks. --ASDFGHJKL=Greatest Person Ever+Coolest Person Ever 15:10, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

No, that type of information is not encyclopedic. --Charleca 18:38, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
There used to be info in the article about the parallels between 1984 and the game, but were removed since they couldn't be sourced. I agree there are many similarities, but that's it. Thunderbrand 20:38, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
There surely must be an encyclopedic relevance to establish the literary links to this game. There are also many similarites to 'One flew over the cuckoo's nest' by Ken Kesey (down to calling the system of oppresion the Combine, the pronounced muteness of the main protagonists and exploration of somewhat similar themes) as well as The Tripods by John Christopher and War of the Worlds in terms of visual and thematic content. These sources are not hard to reference and the entry is incomplete without them. (Speakafreaka 09:39, 22 June 2007 (UTC))
Seems to me that information of that sort is useful and even "encyclopedic" as long as you can provide an outside source. Throwing in your own observations/ideas would be original research and outside the project guidelines Maxweinberg 16:20, 15 September 2007 (UTC)
As your reference to "One flew over the Cuckoo's nest" might suggest, there will be many similarities, entirely coincidental, when trying to portray this social order. --THobern 00:00, 13 April 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by THobern (talkcontribs)
Actually, that's probably not coincidental at all. The term "combine" (as implied in some of Dr. Breen's comments and mentioned by one of the developers in an interview) is a name the oppressed humans have applied to the "Universal Union", probably in part because of the logo that resembles the letters CMB. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.192.72.25 (talk) 21:16, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

Spoiler Tag

An anonymous IP requested (via comment in the article) that a spoiler tag be added to the plot section. From my interpretations of WP:SPOILER, I don't think this is appropriate considering the length of time the game has been available and that the section is already called "Plot". Any other opinions on this? Useight 05:56, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

I agree with whoever this anonymous IP was. Someone should add a spoiler tag. People are still buying and playing Half-Life 2 for the first time, including myself, and as with a movie or a book, I think people should be warned of plot divulgence. And anyway, what could adding a spoiler tag hurt? Spirit Stiff (talk) 03:55, 25 December 2008 (UTC)

No timejumps

It says there are no discontinuities or jumps in time from the protagonists POV, but I'd say there is. When Alyx and Gordon teleport together, they remain in the teleporter for a week before materializing again (according to Dr. Kleiner). Would that qualify as a time jump? 85.19.140.9 21:00, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

  • What it means is that Gordon has (since turning up to work at Black Mesa that morning) never been out of the player's control, or done anything away from the games. Gordon's experience during the time jump is the same as the player's. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lordofthe9 (talkcontribs) 00:00, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

I see that people are clashing a bit over the exact nature of the weapons in the game. Most played online game?

“As of February 28, 2007, Half-Life 2 is the second most played online computer game (excluding MMORPGs), behind Half-Life, according to GameSpy.[17]” This is completely misleading. GameSpy is listing all games based on the Half-Life 2 engine under "Half-Life 2", probably because they all use the same executable name "hl2.exe". In actual fact, the #1 is Counter-Strike, based on the original Half-Life engine, and #2 is Counter-Strike: Source, based on the Source/Half-Life 2 engine. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.192.72.25 (talk) 21:18, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

Do you honestly think the Hl1 multiplayer is popular right now? No, go look at how many servers and players are on it. Its saying all games derived from HL1, like CS, TFC, HL1 DM beat all HL2 derived games- CSS, HL2 DM, however, that statement is old. With TF2 and L4D out, the tables may have turned... its categorizing hl1 engine games as HL1, and HL2 engine games as HL2. Hl1 may be ahead though, only because of Counter-Strike. Again, TF2 and L4D may have changed that. - Mike

Crossbow

I'm pretty sure the iron bars that the crossbow fires are actually electrified, not heated. This would explain both the car battery strapped to the crossbow's underside and the sparks when putting in a new bolt. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.193.118.167 (talk) 02:20, 24 August 2008 (UTC)

The battery could power some kinda heating mechanism, the bold does glow red, suggesting heat. The sparks could just represent this mechanism being activated. Also, if you think about it logically there's no way to keep a simple bolt "electrified" in transit. Rehevkor 02:30, 24 August 2008 (UTC)
This counts as speculation/original research, but the heating mechanism should be the crossbow bolt itself. It's functioning as an electrical resistor. When more current is applied, there is more resistance, generating heat. The sparks are from you completing the (extremely dangerous) circuit. Still counts as heated, though. - Zero1328 Talk? 13:55, 24 August 2008 (UTC)

"Plot"

As someone who hasn't played Half-Life 2, the plot synopsis in this article was unfortunately very unhelpful. (explanation: I played Portal, and was interested in how that plotline might fit into the Half-life universe, so went to wikipedia's articles on HL 1 and 2). Frequent references to concepts that would require a knowledge of the game to understand, and phrases such as "...debrief Freeman on events since the incident at Black Mesa," make it clear that I would have to have played the game already in order to understand this synopsis. While I understand most of the information in this article is helpful to those who have already played the game, I think it would make sense for the plot summary to be written for those fully unfamiliar with Half-life. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.249.50.110 (talk) 23:49, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

Did you read the "Setting" section of the synopsis? That will provide the answer to your example, and probably a few others as well. Green451 (talk) 19:51, 11 October 2008 (UTC)
No, he was right. The original Setting and Plot sections were largely badly-written and incomprehensible. For one, they completely failed to mention the Combine invasion of Earth - even though it's the central part of the plot which is instrumental to understand what's going on!! It's like describing the plot of Lord of the Rings without mentioning the Ring at all. Recently I tried to remedy this by adding appropriate info to the article lead and the Setting section. Hope it makes sense now. 89.77.170.202 (talk) 15:25, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

Citadel Inspiration - Possible Source?

Has anyone noticed that Frank Lloyd Wright's proposed supertall skyscraper the Illinois bears quite a bit of resemblance to the Combine Citadel? Many features of the Illinois are very similar to that of the Citadel, and I was wondering if maybe this was a possible source of inspiration for the design of the Citadel. If any one thinks I'm wrong, go ahead and say so, but It's pretty hard to say, since Valve never said anything about the Illinois being their source of inspiration. I just thought it might be relevant to this article, as Half-Life 2 is where the Citadel is first introduced, so readers might find it interesting. Also, here's[1] a higher resolution picture of it. This page has slowly degenerated from when it was featured on the front page. I'd like to bring it back in line. Here's what I plan to do, or have already done:

  • Create a new section for discussing the ports and various major updates to the game since it's initial release, separate from pre-release development
  • Filter most of the redundant storyline/plot/setting stuff into Half-Life (series), and leave only the Half Life 2 core story here
  • Similarly, filter mods, expansions, etc. that aren't directly based off of Half-Life 2 into either Half-Life (series) or Source (game engine)
  • Significantly shorten or trim all other sections, excluding Critical Response

Let me know what you think. --Pyroguy (talk) 13:33, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

I've corrected all of the spellings to "gravity gun." If anyone has any objections I'll be happy to change it. Yaksar (let's chat) 00:45, 15 January 2011 (UTC)
I think a strong case can be made that the names of all the carried weapons are proper nouns, and should be capitalized. Is there a reason you opted for lower case? --Pyroguy (talk) 16:37, 19 January 2011 (UTC)
I would go for capitalizing, it is often referred to as The Gravity Gun, owing to it some importance and significance. If it were a common noun, it could then go lower case but for the purposes of this article it should be upper case. Sincerely Subzerosmokerain (talk) 16:40, 19 January 2011 (UTC)
Actually, when I put a bit more thought into it, I realized that "gravity gun" wasn't the gun's proper name, it was something much more technical sounding (it's not in the article yet, but if someone could find it that could be cool.) Gravity gun is just the type of gun it is. For example, you wouldn't capitalize shotgun, but you would capitalize a type of shotgun. Yaksar (let's chat) 17:54, 19 January 2011 (UTC)
Dr Mossman calls it "Zero-Point Energy Field Manipulator" but everyone else including the Vances call it "Gravity Gun". I wouldn't say one is the proper name and the other not but in any case this is in-universe discussion and it's more a style question. I would capitalise it because it's unique, but I don't feel very strongly about it. Mezigue (talk) 21:18, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

I am here to announce that I will be re-vitalizing the Valve Task Force, aimed at universally improving articles constituting Valve Corporation, their employees, associates and products. This specific task force has been dormant for quite some time and with two very notable releases coming out this year, I feel like this is the appropriate time to re-stimulate the general aim of this group. For those who are not already members of the Valve Task Force, feel free to add your name to our members list and contribute to whatever articles you feel your contributions may prove beneficial for. Grammar seems to be a problem with the article; awkward writing too, as I've seen in the second sentence which simply lists all the "natures" of Half-Life 2, and it comes off poorly. I also see references with periods after them, references in the lead, and numerous single sentence paragraphs. - The New Age Retro Hippie used Ruler! 2. It is factually accurate and verifiable.

While everything is represented, it is quite evident that the Reception is sorely lacking. i suggest that all mentions of gordon freeman do not say that he "feels" anything, he has no dialouge, and therefore the personality of the player, znd therefore, none of his own, the part that says "to his horror" should be taken out — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.124.101.5 (talk) 05:36, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

Indeed. I have removed this and while I was at it tidied various other bits of the plot. Mezigue (talk) 10:14, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

No cutscenes? Really?

The very first thing you see in the game (at least, as of the last time I played, which was a few months ago) is a cutscene of the "G-Man" talking over a montage of scenes from Half-Life 1 and sets from later in Half-Life 2. And if I remember correctly a similar thing happens at the end, although it's been a while since I finished the game so I may be mixed up about that.

Anyway, Half-Life 1 is the game with no cutscenes. This has at least one - it's not pre-rendered, but it's not from Gordon Freeman's perspective either, unless he's got precognitive abilities and doesn't have a body, which I guess I'm not ruling out until HL3 finally arrives.

Anyway, I'd argue that the sentence referring to the game's lack of cutscenes should be removed, or at least altered. I'm not well-versed in the voodoo of editing Wikipedia without having the changes immediately reversed, though.

(99.56.162.48 (talk) 01:06, 16 June 2012 (UTC))

The article says "The game does not contain pre-rendered or scripted cutscenes" - I don't believe that any scenes in the game are pre-rendered, are you saying that the "scripted" part should be removed? ~ Josh "Duff Man" (talk) 06:32, 16 June 2012 (UTC)

Able/Unable

I'm not grammar expert, but I'm kinda leaning to agree with the two editors who have been changing this. When I read this sentence, I see what they are trying to 'fix' .... The current sentence is "to manipulate larger and heavier objects than he is unable to alone."

This doesn't read clear to me... It's backwards. It allows him to do something "more" than he is "able" to alone. If the sentence read as "objects that he is unable to alone." .... It would make sense with "unable"

The use of "than" here makes "able" seem appropriate to me. While replacing "than" with "that" would make "unable" appropriate. I'm not hugely vested in it, but I think it needs reevaluated. -- ferret (talk) 00:49, 12 August 2013 (UTC)

The sentence is worded confusingly either way, and we can probably write it better so this confuse is not there. --MASEM (t) 00:52, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
Do note that in Half Life everything can be picked up with your hands and a Gravity Gun only allows you to throw objects at high velocities and very far. So the end of that sentence really isn't needed. Or you could just end it as "as well as to manipulate larger and heavier objects than he is able to."Cky2250 (talk) 02:25, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
Edit: The entire sentence should be rewritten it is a run-on sentence it could use either a ";" more then one sentence or deletion of parts to make it one sentence. Cky2250 (talk) 02:42, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
Something like this flows more the transition creates too long of a pause for a , and could be a sentence of its own. "Part-way through the game; Gordon acquires the Gravity Gun, which allows him to draw distant objects towards himself or forcefully push them away. These abilities are required to solve puzzles later in the game, and can also be used to great effect in combat. Any movable object within a proximity of the player has the potential to be used as a makeshift defense (e.g. a file cabinet) or a deadly projectile (e.g. a gasoline can or a buzzsaw blade)." Article Images

Weren't most images removed from this article over there years? I thought there used to be 4+ demonstrating graphics and gameplay. Is wikipedia just eliminating as many images as possible to save space on their servers? Images on the Wiki are increasingly hard to come by, and are usually so tiny as to defeat the purpose of having them at all. I sure don't think an image under 640 pixels wide is going to really demonstrate "the source engine's lighting and shadow effects". Wouldn't 640px be small enough for fair use? Considering that a screenshot itself is such a tiny fraction of the final product. And most people play games at 720p+. The images in this article are so small as to make any details. Would someone be able to enlighten me on the whole fair use nazism going on around here? RUS Starbuck (talk) 04:23, 14 June 2014 (UTC)

EDIT: Yep, looked up a revision from 2007 and there were 9+ images. — Preceding unsigned comment added by RUS Starbuck (talkcontribs) 04:26, 14 June 2014 (UTC)

WP's goal is to be a free content encyclopedia and as such, when we have to use non-free images (as would be HL2 screenshots) they would have to be minimial in both number and size. 640px is too large for fair use for a video game shot as most people will only see it about about 220px. --MASEM (t) 04:35, 14 June 2014 (UTC)

Story rewrite after leak.

Is it worth discussing the story rewrite after the leak of the original HL2 storyline?

Some of the original maps, such as the wooden docks, were shown in the 2003 tech demo in E3, but were never used because of the rewrite after the leak. (although a recreation of this part of the story was later used in Half Life codename: gordon, and in Half-Life: Lost coast.)

198.2.64.10 (talk) 09:16, 25 January 2015 (UTC)

Are there any sources confirming a plot re-write after, and due to, the leak? Removed elements could easily be down to a normal development cycle. Яehevkor 11:02, 25 January 2015 (UTC)

Who undid my edit?

I edited this article changing "gordon destroyed a large alien entity keeping the rift open" to "gordon destroyed the nihilanth keeping the rift open" as that was the actual name of what he killed and yeah it was accepted as a revision but someone changed it back! Article quality concerns, Why even bother with putting images in this article at all? "Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia only the In-crowd can edit" (tired of the bullying)

This article has really gone downhill: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Half-Life_2&oldid=180731814

Notice this article has been seriously stumped in length, and is no longer a featured article. It has been edited to death. The two measly images on this page are so small - I'm sitting in front of a 40in LCD TV at a computer desk and struggling to see how they help illustrate any detail of the video game's world at all. Are they just meant to be in-line thumbnails? I have serious concerns with the readability of any of the images on current modern day 1080p displays, and many people aren't sitting ridiculously close to a large display. I do not believe, especially the first image, is large enough to convey the game world and thus it kind of defeats its own purpose to illustrate. Many articles have gone this way. There are obsessive users that constantly watch articles, undoing rightful edits and resizing images, and using Wiki's hardline suggestion of 320x240 meeting "most common pictorial needs":

"There is no firm guideline on allowable resolutions for non-free content; images should be rescaled as small as possible to still be useful as identified by their rationale, and no larger. This metric is very qualitative, and thus difficult to enforce. Some legal proceedings have discussed the issue, but are inconclusive here.

At the low pixel count end of the range, most common pictorial needs can be met with an image containing no more than about 100,000 pixels (0.1 megapixels), obtained by multiplying the horizontal and vertical pixel dimensions of an image. This allows, for example, images with a 4:3 aspect ratio to be shown at 320 × 240 pixels (common for screenshots from TV, films, and videogames), while allowing common cover art to be shown at 250 × 400 pixels. To scale an image down to a specific number of pixels, use this formula: [...]"

Some things I want to clarify:

1) In the cases of cover art or film stills / screenshots, it seems certainly understandable that they would simply be thumbnail size, and not really meant to be opened outside of the text margin when reading. This makes sense to protect copyright holders because they may use those things for artwork, products, posters, other promotional things. However, 320x240 is NOT meeting most common pictorial for screenshots of computer programs or video games. Why? Because modern display resolutions, this is an outdated view to apply 320x240 for anything outside cover artwork.

2) But even if 320x240 pictures are deemed to small to be readable on modern displays, It still has to be that way right? Because of fair use laws? NO! The "In-crowd" would like us all to think that! The more pictures you delete, the more BARNSTARS YOU GET!! Even one 1920x1080p screenshot of a video game being played would be completely covered under fair-use because it is such a limited portion of the product. The video game product, is an interactive audio visual product that has multiple settings, characters, narratives, etc. And you can interact with these settings and characters. Taking one screenshot of one moment of gameplay, that you cannot interact with? That isn't infringing upon anyone. Wikipedia is scared to be sued for copyright infringement of an experience? You're not going to bully me into that anymore! None of you should be bullied into thinking that either.

3) I can even extend the previous logic to a movie screenshot, to illustrate my point (as an example in this case). How many frames are there in the average film? 90 minutes x 60 seconds = 5400 seconds x 23.33 frames per second = 125,982 frames. One full screenshot would be equal to 1/125,982nd of the product. Even less because we're not counting half of the product - the sound! Imagine what fraction of a product you infringe upon by using a "full resolution" still of a video game? Furthermore I doubt Gabe Newell gives a rat's behind about the image resolution on this article.

The first images to the Half-Life article is 640x480. Is that breaking copyright? Why is the HL1 article not breaking copyright for having an image over the limit but this article would be? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Halflife_ingame.jpg

4) I, and many others are unable to edit Wikipedia or give back to the community. Although many science related articles and images are in much better quality, because of the free domain, but the copyrighted fair use side of wikipedia is lacking in quality. I believe it is because of the bullying, obsessive behavior like "THIS ARTICLE IS MINE, NO ONE ELSE CAN EDIT IT HAHAHA!", outdated fair use policies, and paranoia driven by said "In Crowd". And yes, that implies Wikipedia is corrupted (The community gives each other awards based more on deleting, trimming, articles above anything else even if it hurts Wikipedia).

This is my last plea to those who will listen, to stop harassing users and keeping things in the past. We suggest raising the pixel limit on video game screenshots, or doing away with size limits all together when even a full size screenshot is 1/125,982 of the product. Furthermore, my will to come back and reconcile my problems with Wikipedia - So I can GIVE BACK since it has given so much to me - has been dampened the degrading quality and ownership disputes over articles that everyone should edit, makes this website borderline fraud. People who should be editing, with reliable information, are kept from editing. Once I found out this year that Wikipedia made millions in donations yet begs every user with a banner to give them (him) money, with some written plea message that makes it sound like it is struggling with little staff and underpowered servers - I've had the last straw. I honestly thought for years Wikipedia was barely making enough to keep the servers on. It made me feel taken advantage of. I'm tired of people being taken advantage of on this website and I can't even give back in the one way I can. Since I don't have money, I can't even give back with edits or visual understanding. Wikipedia doesn't seem to care about visual learners, either. I actually posted this without being logged in beforehand because believe you / me - user pages create a lot of judgment. Can't judge me by my IP can you! 162.219.204.36 (talk) 02:12, 11 July 2016 (UTC)

If the video game image size problem really means this much to you, I suggest you voice it at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Video gamesHarryhenry1 (talk) 03:36, 26 February 2017 (UTC)

Merge discussion

Suggest merging Half-Life 2: Survivor into Half-Life 2. Survivor is lacking significant coverage from reliable secondary sources. It's an arcade game with content recycled from Half-Life 2. The article only contains 5 sources, one of which is listed as unreliable. Some information in the article, such as the release date, is not even sourced. Can be summarised in a paragraph within this article. -- The1337gamer (talk) 21:42, 20 January 2017 (UTC)

Leak

I think there should be more information about the 2003 leak. A huge amount of things were leaked and not much is on here about it.--NostalgicColorBird (talk) 21:46, 23 August 2017 (UTC)

Sierra as the publisher

@LTPofficial: Instead of going back-and-forth in editing, please discuss the issue here. Sierra does not appear as the publisher in most sources and did AFAIK only distrubution services as Valve dropped them as publisher in 2001. If you want something added it would be your WP:BURDEN to find supporting claims rather having others bring counter-claims. Lordtobi () 20:51, 27 October 2017 (UTC)

Oh, I see. I do know that EA (current distributor for physical Valve games) only serve as distributors and their logo doesn't appear on the back. Luigitehplumber (talk) 20:54, 27 October 2017 (UTC)

Not done I do not see how those are two terms that would be confused in searches. People searching for the game are extremely unlikely (if at all) going to use the Lambda symbol, and those searching on eigenvalus will not be using "half-life" in the search term. --Masem (t) 01:38, 22 August 2018 (UTC)

I don't understand your response. "λ2" has nothing to do with the term "Half-Life". Where do you see "Half-Life" in the redirect named "λ2" ? The search term being discussed is "λ2" . Why are you bringing up "Half-Life" when "Half-Life" has nothing to do with the naming of the redirect? -- 65.94.42.168 (talk) 03:01, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
