PLC Perth mention
[edit]I see that there is a notice in the article about not removing the section relating to students of Presbyterian Ladies College, Perth. There have been lengthy discussions at the PLC Perth talk page, Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Schools and Wikipedia talk:Reliable sources (now archived as "web forum citing a newspaper article") about whether this information should be included in the PLC Perth article. Wikipedia:Reliable sources states that we cannot accept web forums as sources. Unless someone finds a more reliable source, I believe that this information should be removed to meet this guideline. Blarneytherinosaur 02:03, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
- Where is the archive of "web forum citing a newspaper article", I put that in ctrl+f on all the archive pages and it came up with nothing.--HamedogTalk|@ 03:51, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
Sorry. It is actually entitled "Web forum quoting a newspaper article", item 22 in archive 4 of Wikipedia talk:Reliable sources. My mistake. Blarneytherinosaur 00:13, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
Pictures
[edit]I have just uploaded a load of pictures of the school to wikipedia for use in this article. I have made an attempt to add them to the page. SGoat 16:41, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
Removal of 'Current Developments section
[edit]Twenty Years, I see that you have deleted alot of info about the current developments. Is this necessary?? If there are people regularly updating it with the current happenings why did you think it was necessary to remove it. 203.59.159.81 09:07, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
- It is cruft and is not backed up by reliable sources Twenty Years 09:44, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
- I agree with Twenty years. The text removed was a mix of unsourced speculation and spam, and written in an un-encyclopaedic tone. —Moondyne 10:32, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
Do you think that the original info about what the development involves could be put back in if a source is shown) (Hale Website and current Haleian Magazine) Batxuh 12:53, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
- Certainly some of it could - but it needs to be written with our WP:NPOV policy in mind. I suggest posting what you'd propose here (ie. this talk page) first. —Moondyne —The preceding signed but undated comment was added at 12:58, August 26, 2007 (UTC).
Thanks for explaining everything guys. You have been very helpful and this will assist me in writing articles on Wikipedia in the future. Batxuh 00:54, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
Requested re-assessment
[edit]This is a very good article with a well referenced history section and some good pictures. It seems to have "a majority of the material needed for a completed article" to qualify for a B rating. It could do with more information about the school's curriculum and is missing a section on extracurricular activities. There are a few puzzling terms which need explaining for the benefit of non-Aussies (eg, plexipave, Aquaturf). It would help if you gave age equivalents for the school years as a year 1 in Australia is quite possibly very different from say a Year 1 in the UK. With a long list of important Establishment alumni this is high importance. You need to reduce the lists (ie, convert to prose) and focus in particular on referencing all the alumni and the headmasters if you want to progress to good article status (see the Wikipedia:WikiProject Schools]] page for advice on how to do this). Dahliarose 18:41, 15 September 2007 (UTC)
- I think that you have nailed this assessment right on the head, top work. Twenty Years 02:05, 16 September 2007 (UTC)
Neutrality Tag
[edit]I have removed the neutrality tag. The IP who placed it on the article stated in the edit summary "Written by the PR department", which tends to suggest a pro-Hale bias in the article. I am at a loss to find a pro-Hale sentence in the article, which even criticises the school for its elitest nature. The only thing i could possibly think was written by the PR department is the section on its academic programs, which mentions some awards the school has won, yet this is referenced. I think it is more than fair to remove this tag. Twenty Years 07:06, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
Benjamin Roberts-Smith
[edit]Benjamin Roberts-Smith should be added as an Alumni - as the highest declerated solider in Australia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 116.212.202.142 (talk) 08:42, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
- Done by others before my edits, but mention improved and link added. --DThomsen8 (talk) 00:11, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
It seems odd to me that there is a segment on Corporal Roberts-Smith in the middle of the "House System" section. This format issue needs to be taken care of. User:Haywane
When did Forrest Library open?
[edit]According to Hale School#Forrest Library the library was opened in 2009 (which is consistent with the reference that I just added - Haleian magazine November 2009), however the school's web page for the library says 2008. Can someone resolve this discrepancy. See also Talk:Andrew Forrest#Hale School library. Mitch Ames (talk) 01:49, 18 December 2011 (UTC)
- I checked with Hale School, and e-mails from the Personal Assistant to the Headmaster and the Head of Library confirm that the library opened in February 2009 (presumably to the students, but not "officially" until July). The PA to the Headmaster is arranging to get the school's web site page corrected. Mitch Ames (talk) 09:10, 20 December 2011 (UTC)
- The school's web site has been updated with the correct opening date. Mitch Ames (talk) 11:34, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

My reversion of Saint Lucy's edit
[edit]This edit of mine undoes this edit of Saint Lucy's, because SL's edit was a direct copy/paste from http://www.hale.wa.edu.au/Welcome/Our%20History/Pages/default.aspx (My edit comment saying this was truncated for reasons unknown...) Mitch Ames (talk) 09:33, 24 March 2013 (UTC)
Promotional
[edit]A lot of work has gone into this article, but I have removed some inappropriate entries. Let's not spoil what is essentially a rather good article by allowing such things to creep in. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 09:28, 9 July 2013 (UTC)
Controversies
[edit]This school has a long history of self promotion and resistance to any kind of criticism. Headmaster Dr KG Tregonning himself criticized the school in his book "Young hearts run free" for misrepresenting the true history of the school to falsely claim for itself the title of WA's Oldest School. The School vehemently defended its claim to "1888" in its Old Haleian newsletter, in spite of admitting to the fact of the misrepresentation, and flatly refuses to correct the fraud. It is fundamentally a dishonest claim.
Anecdotal evidence also abounds that suggest its longer term students suffer significant psychological damage in adult life from the emotional deprivation of a same sex school environment. It shares in common with similar schools higher suicide rates and over representation of its students in psychiatric counseling as adults. In spite of its performance claims, Academic excellence is achieved artificially through favoritism that advantages over achievers while ignoring (typically by failing to recognize) the special needs of under achievers.
In the late 1990's a former long term Hale student who became a boarding house master and teacher at the School, Kim Walsh, faced a string of sex abuse charges (having sex with the sisters of students) but suicided before the matter went to trial, this depriving his victims of closure.
In keeping with the other selective private Christian Schools in Western Australia, the Christian ethos is superficial, Spartan and pretentious. This has mostly to do with the inevitable conflict between the Christian message and the rich clients the school caters to.
The Sister School relationship with St Mary's was token and completely meaningless to the students until the arrival of John Inverarity.
All these issues (and the like) need to be included in this article to give it balance. Otherwise its just a false and misleading free advertisement (by omission) for the school. Abunyip (talk) 15:18, 11 November 2013 (UTC)
- Can you provide some reliable sources so that we can verify these statements.? Such sources are a prerequisite for controversial material. Mitch Ames (talk) 12:05, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
- Of course. Working on it. Give me a few weeks, as I'm a bit swamped ATM. Abunyip (talk) 11:46, 14 November 2013 (UTC)
Pool(s)
[edit]Done
This edit "upgraded" the swimming from an 8x50m to an 8x25 and 10x50. A previous edit did something similar. I reverted the previous edit because the reference says 8x50 only. However the school's March 2013 newsletter says new pools are under construction and "should be ready for use in Term 1 next year". December 2013's Haleian says that the pumps are turned on and the pools are destined for handover December 18 (page 9), and that the original pool is being converted to basketball courts (p46) Does anyone know - and can provide a reference for - whether the new pools are completed and open yet, and whether the old pool is gone?
