There surely needs to be a disambiguation here. Hailes was for centuries a large estate in the parish of Colinton, 4 miles from the GPO in Edinburgh. These lands were originally held by the monks of Dunfermline. In the 19th century they were in the possession of Sir Thomas Carmichael, Bart. In addition, there is another Hailes, sometimes called New Hailes, an old seat of the Dalrymple family near Musselburgh. And then there is Hailes Castle, at Prestonkirk parish in East Lothian.
