Speed
[edit]Does anybody know if the part Ans-Liège will be faster once the new station is completely finished ?
- With the re-opening of platform 1 and 2, trains from Ans will not have to slow down to take points at max. 40 km/h anymore - line 36 will seamlessly flow into line 37 again. Also, total capacity of the station will improve, since less time will be lost waiting for a crossing train to leave the station. Just a guess : timetable makers could cut 1-2 minutes from the Ans-Liège travel time. Otherwise this will serve as extra buffer time... Wakari07 (talk) 00:40, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
- As of now, trains coming from line 37 can enter and leave platform 3 to line 36 at 100 km/h. Trains to platform 2 will still have to take points. Platform 1 will be the route straight ahead from line 36 to line 37, most probably at 100 km/h also when work there is finished. Wakari07 (talk) 23:25, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

Length
[edit]HSL 2 really has a length of 64 km. It is about 2 km longer than the parallel line 36 between Leuven and Ans. The distance count in Ans (92.5) pertains to line 36. Both lines join at Ans station, which is at km 94.5 of line 2. Wakari07 (talk) 19:23, 27 September 2008 (UTC)
- I do not agree. The part parallel to the E40 is 51,5 kilometers (from the Bierbeek tunnel to exit 30 near Kemexhe). You can check this yourself on any route planner (as it is parallel to the highway). The connection part from line 36 near Bierbeek is 2,9 kiometers. The reconnection part to line 36 near Ans is 5,9 kilometers (or rounded to the next kilometer 61 kilometers). The Tuc-Rail website itself refers to 62 kilometers Tuc-Rail references. - The 2008 Infrabel network declaration, appendix 9, (only available in Dutch and French) shows my point that going from Leuven to Ans by line 2 is 2.1 km longer than by line 36. However, for exact line lengths I'll have to get back to you. Wakari07 (talk) 22:26, 28 September 2008 (UTC)
- One point is not in contradiction with the other... HSL 2 is a longer line length. But ... the new tracks of HSL 2 do not start in Leuven, nor do they end in Ans. What you refer to in Leuven and at the branch as L36N actually is L36/2. Y Molenbeek is 2.5 kilometers from Leuven. So the 30.6 actually should be 31.3. The numbers for the tunnel, Hoegaarden en Pousset could be right, but Ans station is also 4.4 kilometers from the branch. Ans is 93.8 in stead of 93.4 according to your own sources. At the second Y, the 92.5 should become 89.0 and the 94.5 should be 91.0.
- Result: line 2 IS 2 kilometers longer, the completely seperate track from HSL 2 is not 64 kilometers but 59.9 (corresponds with my findings of 60.3 kilometers. Tuc Rail will perhaps include the 36/2 track in their total of 62 kilometers (or the track lenght of the 2 sidings ?). - Any railway network is the aggregate of tracks/lines (with automatic signals) and points/switch sets (aka. junctions or stations, covered by interlocking/controlled signals). Line 2 stretches from the entry signals protecting the Leuven station switch grid (F-M.9 and FX-M.9 kilometer point 30.765) to the entry signals of Ans station (M-D.45 to MX-D.45 kilometer point 94.549). There is no such thing as a branch on line 2, only the crossovers at Hoegaarden and Pousset. L.36/2 is a branch from L.36 to Leuven; from Bierset to Ans, both lines 2 and 36 run in parallel. Every train driver on the line can confirm this for you, or even better, you can go out and check it with your own eyes. You seem to get your numbers from a route mapper, which is not very accurate for railway tracks. So my count (94.549-30.765) makes 63.784 kilometers. Can't be much more precise. Cheers. - I'm really not going to argue about those two kilometers, I don't like the tone this conversation is getting. Your own sources 2008 Infrabel network declaration, appendix 9 specify 93.8 for Station Ans, and not 93.4. What about that? Now you're specifying the line length to end in Station Ans. My "additional calculation" was based on mapping software, but that was only the evidence of the figures found in your documentation and on the page we're editing here, so yes I agree that it would not be very accurate to use that information as the only source, but it does confirm some points ... The last part till Station Ans the fast track is the old line 36, and line 36 was now placed on the position of the former line 36B. If you want to add all those tracks to the total length of the "NEW" HSL 2, fine. But, please do change the drawing on the page as well. It does not make sense to state "92.5, 94.5 (resp. L.36 and L.2) End of HSL" in the drawing, if you now change your point of view and state "from Bierset to Ans, both lines 2 and 36 run in parallel". If you define the high speed line to Ans, you can not put "End of HSL" in the picture ... The definition of the new line in a general public encyclopedia to me would be the "new tracks", not the distance between two security points ... As I live very close to the line, I did plan on taking some pictures this weekend, as commons or wikipedia appear not to have some pictures from this section, and I happily leave the new track length at 64 kilometers. Border crossing
