There is a conflict with the date of scrapping (5 May 1946) and being stranded on rocks in Mount's Bay (8 May 1946). The reference I have is (Larn, R. and Larn, B. (1991) Shipwrecks around Mounts Bay. Penryn: Tor Mark Press.) I'll look up the Penzance newspapers of the time to see what dates they give. Idarwald

[edit]

I'm sure years down the line someone will read this and perhaps have an answer but I was reading the speech Hitler gave after Pearl Harbor and in it he lists the chasing of German merchant ships "Frigia, Idarwald and Rhein", which I thought maybe this article was referring to with "Idarwald" but there is no page for that ship, nor a source listed on this page for that event, and the date on this page would be after the event Hitler is referring to, since it says here that the war had already started. So I'm not sure if this page is incorrect or if there is another ship named Idarwald. 2601:48:4301:2ED0:BCC7:7EBB:5CEE:1499 (talk) 09:02, 26 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I am sorry but I do not understand the question. Can you expand on it? I think the speech you mention is the one on 11 December 1941 in which Hitler declared war on the USA. Its on WikIsource (https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Adolf_Hitler%27s_Declaration_of_War_against_the_United_States) I have just read the relevant part. He said US ships had pursued three German ships (Idarwald,Phrygia and Rhein in November 1940. The article says Idarwald was scuttled in December 1940 and this was observed from a US ship off Cuba. This looks like the same incident. I assume wikipedia in the latter part of the article is more accurate than Hitler as to what happened but they do agree that Idarwald was scuttled by the crew.. The first mention in the article is different. Whichever date is correct the war between Britain and Germany had already been going on for fourteen or fifteen months (since September 1939) although US was not yet part of it (and wasn't for another year until Hitler's speech.) The wikipedia list of shipwrecks for December 1940 says the ship was scuttled on 9th December 1940, having first been intercepted by Diomede on 8th December. I am going to alter the first part of this article to delete any question of capture of the ship, although the crew were captured. Hitler's speech suggests Phrygia and Rhein were sunk in the same incident. The list of shipwrecks however says Phrygia was scuttled on 16th November 1940 when the Germans thought three US ships were actually British (or Canadian, Australian etc) I have found no mention of the Rhein.
