During Howard government administration, the "Coombs legacy" in Aboriginal affairs came under increasing criticism. It has been argued that the communal land ownership implicit in Aboriginal land rights was keeping Aboriginal people poor and dependent on welfare by preventing the private ownership of land.[1]

The issue has had substantial debate within Australia/media circles. Piers Akerman is not the sole reference addressing the issue. Some of the tragic stories that have surfaced recently relate to the intervention in the top end, and Aurukun. The sentence itself was modified from a biased view and so is a compromise, but the issue is real and substantial. By all means, rewrite it so it is better, but please don't delete it as if it isn't an issue. DDB (talk) 01:35, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It may (or may not be) a legitimate issue. But it of only tangential relevance to Mr Coombes -- the subject of the article -- who had been dead ten years when the articles cited were published. Possibly "The Coombes legacy" deserves it's own separate article, or possibly it would be more appropriate in Land Rights. 119.63.219.74 (talk) 05:22, 22 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

clarification needed re journey from marxism to keynesianism

[edit]

There's an odd juxtaposition in this article which seems to suggest an inaccuracy but I'm not sure where. The introduction suggests that Coombs was a socialist while studying in Perth but was converted to Keynesianism while studying in london. However the 'early life' section points out that in london he studied under a leading marxist thinker. Does this mean that he converted to keynesianism while studying marxism or is one of the statements inaccurate? clarification is needed. Pugsworth (talk) 05:17, 29 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

clarification needed re influence of melbourne uni economists

[edit]

The second sentence of the 'Public service' section is poorly written. It is unclear whether economists Giblin and Copland were influencing Coombs or the treasury.Pugsworth (talk) 05:21, 29 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Légion d'honneur?

[edit]

I've read that he was awarded this French honour, but cannot confirm it anywhere. Does anyone know? -- Jack of Oz [Talk] 12:26, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Companion of the Order of Australia

[edit]

Copied from Talk:Patrick White:

Both Patrick White & Nugget Coombs were in the group of 6 awarded the first civil (now called general) ACs in the Queen's Birthday Honours List 1975.
They both resigned from the order in 1976 when the AK was created - see
I haven't yet located the gazette entries for their resignations.
As they both resigned, from that point neither of them were ACs, and hence no-one else is entitled to call them ACs, and hence neither appear in "It's an Honour". Pdfpdf (talk) 10:00, 23 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
