Who can be added?

[edit]

Can we add people who has Gustav as one of their multiple first names? Like Carl Gustav Jacob Jacobi and Johann Peter Gustav Lejeune Dirichlet. 2A01:799:119E:BE00:A4D6:6188:28F0:9E3D (talk) 18:15, 16 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation

[edit]

For some people, the English pronunciation of the name can be sourced from Oxford BBC Guide To Pronunciation. Most of the Gustafs/Gustavs in this book are pronounced with an ending f-sound, the exeption being Gustav Holst, whose name is pronounced with an ending v-sound. There are no Swedes here except for Gustavus Adolphus. The article currently states that the name is always pronounced with an ending v. Is this true for the Swedes? Swedish spelling was reformed in 1906, and one of the changes made was that where a word ending with a v-sound was spelled with -f, it is now the more intuitive -v. In case you know Swedish, here's a bit about it on svwiki: https://sv.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gammalstavning#V-ljudet . The pre-reform spelling remained in some names, but it was always pronounced with a -v. It seems the distinction isn't as clear in English, so I'll see if I can update that.
