gun-deck(ing)? Is this usage of the term accurate?
[edit]Referring to the following text:
- gun-deck(ing) is a term used to convey that one has endangered the safety of the vessel equivalent to pointing the guns at the deck such that when they are fired the obvious catastrophic result will occur. The term has further evolved to include falsifying of testing and maintenance endangering the safety of the vessel or crew.
Is this accurate? Can cannons decline and rotate far enough to target the deck of the ship they are firing from? 216.36.186.2 (talk) 17:30, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
- With the exception of small machine guns, most permanently mounted artillery is equipped with cut-out cams to disconnect the firing circuit when the gun is pointing toward any part of the ship. While there have been rare instances of accidents attributed to mis-alignment of firing cut-out cams, I have never heard the term gun decking applied to such an accident.Thewellman (talk) 04:32, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
Slang
[edit]I do not believe this is in any way related to Jury Rigging, the connotations are completely different. I am not questioning the use of gun deck to indicate falsification, though I have never heard it personally. Perhaps someone can provide some reference or at least clarification. stuston (talk) 22:47, 26 January 2009 (UTC) Reference removed stuston (talk) 17:27, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
Gun Port
[edit]Why does gun port redirect here? This article has nothing to do with gun ports. Nibios (talk) 04:21, 17 March 2011 (UTC)
- No idea, but after ending up here while doing some research for terminology, in case it's useful to anyone, terms for parts of a gunport -- The hinged doors that lift up and down are referred to as 'the lid', and the rope pulled on to open it is the 'port tackle'. More useful stuff about gunports here -- http://www.aboutnelson.co.uk/35armaments.htm 86.178.113.27 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 15:58, 9 November 2011 (UTC).
