'Gujarat Science City'
Science Popularization The Gujarat Science City has been organizing various activities by involving students, teachers and visitors as much as possible for making science simple, and interesting. The Scientific and educational activities in the science city have been broadly categorized into five areas and have been described as follows.
1. Science Popularization Programme: Celebrating Science! (a) Celebration of Important scientific event related days, science –week, etc and to involves many as students, teachers, parents, common people as well as media and policy makers in different themes. This helps us to raise the local issues at global platform and vice versa. (b) Organizing of training programs and workshops for teachers, Science Communicators and science club members and coordinators. (c) Organizing of Vigyan Mela (science Exhibition) and model making workshop, popular scientific film festivals, popular science book exhibition, etc. (d) School outreach Programme. 2. Academic Programme on Science and Maths:
(a) Organization of talent nature programs in science and mathematics for teachers and students. (b) Organization of talent nurture programs in science and Math Olympiads for school students and teachers. (c) Meet the scientist Programme: Interacting with eminent scientist. (d) Career counseling in frontiers S&T for higher secondary students. (e) Organization of Children’s Science Congress and short term training workshop in science Communication.
3. Material Development: (a) Development of Activity modules on S&T communication through puppetry, popular Science Writing , illustration and Journalism , Organization of nature camps, Learning Mathematics through Origami , training module in hydroponics – fun with plants soil less condition , model rocketry , telescope making ,night sky observation, etc (b) Design and Development of theme based posters like, S& T for sustainable development. Water for life, save Our sky, Atom for Peace, etc. and theme based activity, exhibit write up, games and worksheets.
(c) Development of standard reference library and interactive website.
4. Training Students Volunteers: (a) Involvement of Students volunteers as interns and providing necessary training and guidance for professional development. (b) Skill enhancement of promising science writers and communicators. (c) Exposure into different modules of science popularization activities. 5. Media Resource Centre: (a) Design and develops necessary back ground materials as media kits on important scientific events and activities. (b) Arrange interviews of renowned scientists and technocrats. (c) Design and Development of audio – Visual CDs, multimedia presentation, and theme based slide shows, etc. (d) Contributing to weekly science column in local newspapers. 6. Science Clubs: The Gujarat Science City in association with the Vigyan Prasar, Department of Science Club programs in an organized manner throughout the state with networking to weave all science clubs societies, organization. About 500 science Clubs have been formed and renewed and the club members are oriented to undertake various scientific activities.
Outreach Programme:
Gujarat Science City regularly organizes different science popularization programmes in the different schools in the state and also visits many other parts of the country where the dissemination of science is not adequate. In addition, GCSC staff members also participated in various conferences and workshop in Different parts of the country and share the experiences for the noble cause.
Science Olympiads: Bringing Equity and Excellency!
The Gujarat Science City has started the Junior Science & Maths Olympiads for the students of std VIII and IX for the first time in the country. The Junior Science & Maths Olympiad is aimed to boost the young children to do excel in the above subject as well as to prepare the themselves for the National and International Science Olympiads in std. XI and XII. The Programme has great potential in bringing professional development among teachers and the curriculum.
GSC has also been organizing orientation programmes on science Olympiad for awareness and, more involvement of student and the teachers of the state. The national level professors and the teacher and to motivate them for the career in basic science.
Science Matters: Popular Science Lecture Series
The Gujarat Science City has started a popular science lecture series titled as “Science Matter”.
