Founding father?
[edit]I have searched on google.com but I have found no evidence supporting the bold claim that Owen is one of the "founding fathers" of Game Theory. I will let the article rest for a day and if there is no evidence to bolster that claim, I will VfD b/c otherwise Owen is not notable. There are many university professors out there, many more notable, but Wikipedia is not an academic repository for all professors. I will attempt to message the author of the article. EDIT: no can do...the author has listed Owen in List of mathematicians and List of Colombians already, making me suspect vanity -- Bubbachuck 05:08, 12 August 2005 (UTC)
Re: Founding father?
[edit]Claiming tha Google is the only source of evidence is also false (especially for scientific work). The fact that Owen is considered a founding father of game theory is not my claim: The short Owen's biography that appeared in Wikipedia was also published in
Theory and Decision Publisher: Springer Science+Business Media B.V., Formerly Kluwer Academic Publishers B.V. ISSN: 0040-5833 (Paper) 1573-7187 (Online) DOI: 10.1007/s11238-004-5630-x Issue: Volume 56, Numbers 1-2 Date: February 2004
Contemporary mathematicians in evolutionary game theory like Josef Hofbauer, University of Vienna, Austria and Ken Binmore, University College London, United Kingdom might give a better answer to this. Perhaps it is better to ask the editorial board of Theory and Decision why they wrote that in the foreword of such issue.
The author.
- I apologize if I sounded condescending or insulting to you or Dr. Owen. There was no malicious intent on my part, I just did not like the fact that "founding father" was asserted when I could not find it on google.com. I did look into your arguments (I would appreciate a non-sarcastic tone in the future though), and found the article you were speaking of here, as well as the entire biography...copied word for word. I am forced to tag with "copyvio" because its a published scientific journal and is obviously copyrighted. wikipedia does not allow copyrighted information on its pages.
- here are your options if you want the article to remain:
- 1) re-write the biography in your own words, perferably from multiple sources
- 2) request permission from the journal editors
- I hope that helps. On the bright side, I am utterly convinced Dr. Owen is notable now :) -- Bubbachuck 03:41, 13 August 2005 (UTC)
- P.S. from my experience with biology articles, google is an excellent resource for scientific papers. for example, if i know two or more of the authors of a paper, i can enter their names and a keyword and most of the time the first hit is the article i'm looking for.
- it appears the link changes. try [1]. -- Bubbachuck 05:46, 13 August 2005 (UTC)
Answer, again
[edit]Please accept my apologies. I did not want to sound rude or something. Also, I apologize for my ignorance: I have realized this biography is copyrighted (copyright laws in my country are not as sharp as in the U.S.). I am truly sorry. I would like to remove the original piece and write it again with my own words but on the web site there is a notice saying "Please do not edit this page for the moment". What should I do?
Thank you very much.
P.S. Perhaps you are right. This is the only biography of Dr. Owen in which I found he is a "founding father". If I can not come como across another reference that states the same, I will avoid such words and write only the facts.
- You may write it on a temporary subpage, linked from the original copyright notice. Quote: If you want to work on this article meanwhile, write a new article at the temporary subpage, and indicate that you have done so on this page's talk page. By the way I encourage you to create a Wikipedia account before you do so it will properly credited to your name. -- Bubbachuck 22:20, 13 August 2005 (UTC)
