Spider & X-Guard

[edit]

The images for the spider guard and x-guard are wrong. Spider guard involves using the soles of the feet on the biceps or hips, whilst controlling the sleeves. The x-guard is hard to describe with words, but it isn't what's shown in the picture. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 60.242.120.126 (talk) 10:45, 27 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

50-50 Guard

[edit]

I don't think it was popularized by Gordo. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.211.194.106 (talk) 22:33, 4 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

controversy & references

[edit]

Do we really need 7 references for the controversy surrounding the 50-50 guard, especially 7 to the same website, and even more when the references aren't even nicely formated? I am axx (talk) 14:37, 20 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Turtle

[edit]

Referring to the turtle as "turtle guard", does not conform with the definition of the guard position that is given at the top of the entry. I suggest that the turtle-portion should be removed as there is nothing definition-wise suggesting it is a guard.

This is also obvious eg. if a competitor goes to turtle at the start of a match. No one would refer to this as "N.N. pulled guard".

Top image

[edit]

While it should probably have a place somewhere in the article, the USMC manual diagram is rather ugly for the first image on the page. I'm going to see about getting some nice photographs for this (and many other grappling positions) to improve the images on this and other grappling position pages.

Rubber guard?

[edit]

Should the rubber guard be included somewhere on this page? 63.225.175.108 12:44, 6 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Definately... The rubber guard should be under closed guard. Rubber guard will be getting more and more prominent because it can break the stalemate and allow the bottom to transition or submit with a high success rate. --71.192.88.79 15:58, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Styles mentioned

[edit]

I can understand a desire to avoid POV wording, but mentioning judo first and BJJ / catch wrestling at the end of the section (almost as an afterthought) is, in fact, POV. BJJ utilizes the guard much, much more than Judo, and is the origin of the term "guard" to describe the position and is the name of the article. It is reasonable to mention BJJ first and then mention that it is also utilized in Judo and catch-as-catch-can (and Luta Livre, for that matter).

"also heavily utilized in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu" is misleading to the reader, because the guard is heavily utilized in BJJ, but not in Judo. An alternate phrasing should be used. FlowWTG (talk) 19:11, 11 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed Multiple Merger

[edit]

I've proposed merging the articles, Simple guard pass, Stacking guard pass, and Near knee guard pass, into the Passing the Guard section of this article. I feel this will more concisly overview the different methods, and will cut down on the ammount of stub class articles pertaining to guard passing. Thoughts? Jdcollins13 (talk) 16:33, 16 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Makes sense to me. FlowWTG (talk) 05:18, 17 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. Merging those articles seems like the right thing to do. Papaursa (talk) 19:42, 10 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Done merger complete, along with redirects and whatnot. Jdcollins13 (talk) 19:54, 13 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Self-defense

[edit]

Is the guard supposed to be of any practical use for self-defense purposes? Lying on your back with your attacker between your legs surely puts you in a very vulnerable position, even if the attacker is on his own. He can punch you in the groin or stomach, he can grab your testicles, or if you defend your groin, he can pinch and twist the flesh and skin of your thighs - all very painful techniques. And if he is bigger and heavier than you - which is likely if he is an attacker - he can just crush you with his weight.86.146.146.163 (talk) 18:29, 27 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
