ENGVAR
[edit]Johnbod I don't care which English variety is used, but since I was rewriting, and don't know British spelling, I switched as I went. It's OK that you switched back to British, but I don't think you got everything, and now there seems to be a mix (for example, if I ctrl-f on ize vs ise). If you want to return to British, could you please fix it all to help me out, as I'm not sure on most ? SandyGeorgia (Talk) 00:08, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
- You think you can recognize it, but you "don't know British spelling"? You "don't care" but you go to the trouble of changing it? No. Thanks to Oxford spelling you needn't worry about "ize vs ise". But there's no excuse for changing to "color", per WP:ENGVAR, without getting talk page consensus, or silence. Johnbod (talk) 00:14, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
- Johnbod, there's no need for upset; I was the only one rewriting and there was no established variety for ten years, until one student edited. I don't know when to use ize or ise and what other issues there might be; all I see now is an article that is neither/nor as far as I know. Would you mind helping? If it's going to be an issue, at minimum we should put one of those templates so the rest of us know what to use. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 00:21, 2 June 2023 (UTC)

- Also, the article existed for ten years with no clear indication one way or another;[1] if it is to be British English, I'll need help getting there. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 00:13, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
- As a clear stub (see WP:ENGVAR). But for the last 3 years, since it stopped being a stub, it has clearly been BE. Johnbod (talk) 00:17, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
- Fine, no problem; would you mind then checking/fixing the entire article, and putting a template on the talk and the article for whichever version we are using? The only way I know to check for BrEng is basically to look for ise v ize. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 00:20, 2 June 2023 (UTC)

- To place a template we need to know what we are we using, so is it "British English" or "British English Oxford spelling" (my favourite!). Bon courage (talk) 00:57, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
- I don't know ... that's the problem ... nothing was established before I rewrote the article, and I don't know the difference(s) anyway. (I'd be most happy at this point to revert the lot to before I waded in, and unwatch and let someone else do the work.) SandyGeorgia (Talk) 01:02, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
- This early diff[2] has 'discolouration' which I think is the first to have an ENGVAR flavour, but I think it's open whether this is Oxford or not. Bon courage (talk) 01:17, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
- I don't know if this helps, but the course instructor (User:Bcritical) is Australian. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 01:21, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
- Well, you learn something new every day - we have a template for this![3] Bon courage (talk) 01:24, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
- Maybe Casliber can run through it then? I won't mind if someone wants to revert all my work, and won't make the mistake again of wading in to rewrite a coloured article! SandyGeorgia (Talk) 01:34, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
- Found Australian English#Spelling; unsure if that's what we had here for the last three years. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 01:54, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
