Why?
[edit]Does anyone have any idea why the "A" line was eliminated and replaced by a bus? I don't know if this information is even possible to find out at this point though, as it was so many years ago... --Tagith 03:41, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
- I added some info about the streetcar shortage; it also seems unlikely the branch would have remained substituted for so long if it didn't have low ridership compared to the other branches. -- Beland 23:29, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
- I'd hesitate to say "low" (since I'm on the 57 meatwagon regularly) but ridership beyond Oak Square is certainly much lower than further in. A was also the longest (distance) run of the local-service surface lines (Highland Branch being rapid transit and higher fares.) Finally, once the Pike extension was built, inbound service crossed the Pike the wrong way on a one-way street. I do not know of a single case where the MTA or MBTA de-bustituted a route that was bustituted for some reason other than immediate maintenance needs (e.g. Mattapan line, which isn't back yet). --Jnik 03:06, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
