Talk:Great White Way
yes i think it should be
Barry Popik here. It should be merged, but this definition must be expanded. The 1901 Albert Bigelow Paine book of this name must be mentioned. Shep Friedman applied the term GWW to Broadway in 1902. See: http://www.barrypopik.com/article/17/great-white-way
Nope, it shouldn't be. The Great White Way has also been used for other cities' entertainment and shopping districts, not always in imitation of Broadway. In Vancouver BC, where I'm from, the former Great White Way was the 0-block East and 0-block West of Hastings Street, and acquired its name from the dazzling array of showy neon decorating theatres, restaurants, stores and other establishments in that area (until "urban renewal" in the 1960s, Vancouver's total mileage of neon was second only in the world to Shanghai's); so a disambig will be needed once someone (maybe me) writes an article on that Great White Way; probably no doubt named in emulation of New York's Broadway, but a very different place entirely; maybe there are other North American cities with similar?Skookum1 21:52, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
