Is the name really "Great Northern Concerete Toboggan Race" with an extra 'e' in 'Concerete'? --darklilac 00:12, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
Nope. I fixed it. Thanks Alangstone 23:15, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
An Early GNCTR Anecdote
I was a student in the Structural Engineering Technology (SET) program at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) from 1974 to 1976. That first winter we heard that the University of Calgary was holding an American Concrete Institute (ACE) sponsored competition that came to be known as the Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR).
SAIT entered four teams in that first GNCTR and one of them, unfortunately not mine, won the competition. It was held at the Canyon Ski Area in Red Deer Alberta and was a very exciting event. While my team did not win, my experience did make me aware of the life-and-limb-related risks of riding concrete toboggans ;-).
However, since a SAIT team did win the first GNCTR, SAIT hosted the second GNCTR. In the interests of self-preservation, that second winter I decided to organize the GNCTR, build a second toboggan but to not compete directly as a rider. Perhaps as a result, I lived to tell this tale ;-). I wrote a story that was published in the Journal of the ACI and will search my files for a copy and the related reference.
