Comment

Is there any evidence that this was actually a 'Tithe' barn? The National Trust's (http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-vh/w-visits/w-findaplace/w-greatcoxwellbarn/w-greatcoxwellbarn-brief_history.htm) page about the barn doesn't mention 'Tithe' - and Mick Aston in 'Mick's Archeology' (p 107) seems to suggest that it's not WikiWriter (talk) 14:59, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Renaming

I'm for a Rename - I'm not an expert in the field, but I understand that 'tithe' has implications of 'in kind' payment of rent. Since it was build for a Monastery - who (I'm guessing) claimed the whole crop on their land - it was build at a 'grange' barn, but it may have become a 'tithe' barn after the 'privatisation' of Henry VIII. Also - 'tithe' in the title suggest purpose - there are other 'Great Barns' in England - why not rename the article to 'Great Barn - Great Coxwell' (for example) then the title does not imply purpose, but the article content could contain the 'discussion' regarding 'tithe' / 'grange' WikiWriter (talk) 13:40, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Which county?

An IP editor has recently (twice) changed this to say Great Coxwell is in Berkshire (although the village article, Great Coxwell says it transferred to Oxfordshire in 1974), saying "the administrative boundaries for local authorities were moved, but not the actual county boundaries", and citing http://www.abcounties.co.uk/counties/confusion.htm. However, Wikipedia:Naming conventions (UK counties) makes it clear that "We should use the current, administrative, county", and that "We should mention historic (or ancient) counties in articles about places and in references to places in a historic context, but only as an afternote". So I've reverted again - I'm adding this note here in case any discussion is required, and in case the editor (who seems to be on a dynamic IP) doesn't see the note I left on their own Talk page. -- Boing! said Zebedee 11:31, 19 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
