[edit]This is a troublesome neologism. The usage given in the article, the energy required to manufacture an object, seems to be a translation of a German term used by some "green" groups.
In the Netherlands, "grey energy" has a completely different meaning - it is energy from fossil fuels. This definition is embodied in the Regulating Energy Tax [1], and "grey energy" in that sense is taxed to make "green energy" price-competitive.
Wikipedia has an article on this subject. See Embodied energy. That seems to be the more established term. --John Nagle 16:54, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
It should anyway be Grey, not Gray, right? The germann term is not just used be greens, but well established in scientific discourse.194.138.12.146 (talk) 11:57, 24 May 2010 (UTC)
