Hoot owl shift

[edit]

If an editor wants this added then that's fine provided it is referenced. An introductory paragraph for a DMB page, describing the subject is fine, as permitted by WP:DAB. TerriersFan 17:05, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Origin

[edit]

I found a reference to graveyard shift in premature burial with regards to a possibility of the origin of this phrase. Yahoofx (talk) 17:48, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It might have to do with the fact that the frequency of dying has a peak at early morning (iirc at 3 am). So people working in the night shift in a hospital might encounter death of patients more often than in other shifts. Just speculation of mine, of course. I am rather disgusted by the addition of an edit-only view that claims that "graveyard shift" is not orginated from the 19th century belief in the burial of the living dead, especial since the Oxford English Dictionary, the authoritative text on the origin of English words, lists the above event as the earliest recorded occurance of the term. Michael Quenton (sp) is NOT an authority on 19th century terms or origins, but an authority on the modern evolution of the English language, so I find it insulting that this page submits to the authority of a critic who has long be considered biased against certain realms of British history and culture. The very quote used on this Wikipedia page was dismissed in a recent MLA conference as biased and an attempt to restructure the history of words. I feel that the historially and critically accepted view (most well-known authorities of the Victorian period accept this definition) of the word as a reference to the 19th century belief needs to be added to this page, although I also think that the controversy over this belief can be noted. 24.56.116.162 (talk) 05:56, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Graveyard shiftGraveyard Shift – The only terms that are not proper names are the work shift and graveyard slot. As the other terms are all named for the work shift, I propose that the work shift is the primary topic, and the existing page graveyard shift should be a redirect to Shift plan#Graveyard shift, which can be tagged with a hatnote linking to graveyard slot and this disambiguation page.
