Copy Edit
[edit]An editor asked for a copy edit review at the GOCE page. This article seems to have good information, but is not written with an encyclopedic tone and has some stilted language, possibly in an effort to paraphrase the source material. My first three processes have been: (1) distribute the images thoughout the article, including them in the chronological sections to which they apply, (2) rewrite the lead to summarize the article, but this needs much more work, and (3) rewrite the first section. There seems to be a lot of detail which may bog-down the flow, so I'm moving some of this to footnotes. More when I have more energy--Kevin Murray (talk) 01:00, 26 October 2010 (UTC)
Genius of America
[edit]Anyone know WHERE "The Genius of America" went? It is listed in the March 1887 auction of Stewart art, but there is no price listed. The small replica sold for $325 & seems to be in a museum in the midwest. DEddy (talk) 03:16, 8 November 2010 (UTC)
Hi DEddy. I'm not 100% sure, but I know that after the furnishings of the hotel were auctioned off in the 1950s, the chandellier and a lot of the furnishings went to a hotel in Washington DC. I thought I remember reading that the painting went to the hotel as well, but I could be completely mis-remembering. If I come across the information I will let you know. - I guess this answers the question: http://www.timesunion.com/local/article/1870-mural-Genius-of-America-on-display-after-4197066.php . Peter Flass (talk) 19:23, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
"They first leased the building to Woolley and Genaus?"
[edit]Section - A.T. Stewart years. Is this a typo or OCR problem? The next paragraph says "Woolley and Gerrans." This source indicates it should be Gerrans throughout "The hotel was leased in June last to Messrs. James Gerrans (now deceased), H.M. Gerrans, and W.E. Woolley." - http://books.google.com/books?id=XB8DAAAAYAAJ&lpg=RA2-PA20&ots=damKrXUk29&dq=woolley%20%20gerrans&pg=RA2-PA20#v=onepage&q=woolley%20%20gerrans&f=false
The date of this reference is 1887, which would imply a lease date of 1886. Since this is contemporaneous, it is probably reliable. Peter Flass (talk) 19:21, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
- I made this change. Peter Flass (talk) 12:37, 23 April 2013 (UTC)
Frank Hawthorn
[edit]The Woolley Years:
Demolition of the hotel was saved by Frank Hawthorn.
Is this a typo for "Frank Hathorn" or is this someone else? Peter Flass (talk) 12:36, 23 April 2013 (UTC)
- Doh - changed this. On the other hand, it's still not clear to me what this sentence means. Peter Flass (talk) 12:39, 23 April 2013 (UTC)
