Ref languages
[edit]Do the references really need to specify that the language=English? We're not likely to find any in Afrikaans, and this is the English WP?–MDCollins (talk) 02:27, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
- I don't think it's necessary. Unless specified, people assume it's in English. Much in the same way that you don't specify a webpage is in http format, it's just expected. Nev1 (talk) 02:45, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
- Would anyone object if I remove the "|language=" field from references? Nev1 (talk) 17:25, 6 November 2008 (UTC)
South African flag
[edit]The flag shown in the infobox is anachronistic. Pollock, rightly or wrongly (and it appears that he, at least, thought wrongly) played under the flag of the Union of South Africa (pictured). I have commented on the use of the SAn flag before but I an not sure if anything has happened since then. In a general sense (and maybe better discussed at WT:CRIC) I would remove the flag from the infobox altogether as (admittedly minor) WP:FLAGCRUFT. -- Mattinbgn\talk 10:17, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
- Agreed on both points. If it has to be there, it should not be anachronistic. But it's crufty and unnecessary. --Dweller (talk) 10:22, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
- This probably does needs further discussion at WT:CRIC. To implement historical flags is possible, the infobox just needs coding, but it is a pointless exercise while there are calls for the flags to be removed. A simple poll on whether a) the flag is necessary, and if yes, b)should the historical ones be used?
- Reminds me that the issue of the infobox still hasn't been resolved over players playing for more than one country (I had a go, but didn't have time to do a proper job on it). Presumably there are also players who played under both the Union and RSA flags - what would happen then? Quickest job is to remove it...

Newlands walk-off
[edit]I am having real trouble finding anything about the Newlands walk-off in around 1971 other than a vague throwaway mention. I know RG & PM Pollock were involved because I have a picture but I know very little else about the incident other than the venue and that only the one ball was bowled in the match. I don't know the date, what the teams were, who else was involved, what were the consequences etc. Can anyone help? -- Mattinbgn\talk 10:44, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
- Is this RS? ([1]) --Dweller (talk) 10:51, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
- I think this might be, but it's brief on this point. --Dweller (talk) 10:54, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
- I'm pretty sure it was Transvaal vs Rest of South Africa btw. --Dweller (talk) 10:56, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
- I have found this rather good source (discusses motivation as well) but doesn't specify Pollock as one of the players involved. -- Mattinbgn\talk 11:05, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

1972 Wisden? --Dweller (talk) 11:08, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
- Possibly, if I had even one Wisden in my possession! (I haven't been game to start collecting them—being scared where I would end up) Hopefully, someone with a copy will read this and be able to assist. -- Mattinbgn\talk 11:41, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
Selector
[edit]Pollock is or has been a UCB selector, but I can't find RS to show dates. Anyone? --Dweller (talk) 14:03, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
CMJ quote
[edit]Any suggestions for wikilinking "force"? I'm not entirely sure what he means by "force"... is it a firm kind of straight batted defensive shot that goes for runs? Played off front foot or back, or both? --Dweller (talk) 17:00, 6 November 2008 (UTC)
- I think one normally hears of a "force off the back foot". It's much like a back defensive stroke, played with a straight bat, but hit with more force(!) with the intention of scoring runs. JH (talk page) 17:55, 6 November 2008 (UTC)
Some sources
[edit]- Grey High School has some great stuff! -- Mattinbgn\talk 20:22, 6 November 2008 (UTC)
- Heavy bat and on-side weakness - from Rodney Hartman -- Mattinbgn\talk 20:31, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

Nickname
[edit]I'd never heard of that "Little Dog" nickname before? Are we sure that it was reasonably widely used? JH (talk page) 21:41, 6 November 2008 (UTC)
- It's delightful - see JPeeling's talk page. --Dweller (talk) 22:04, 6 November 2008 (UTC)
