A fact from Gottfried von Hagenau appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the Did you know column on 3 April 2017 (check views). The text of the entry was as follows:
There is no clear proof where he was born. Background is that Hagenau is a very common old-frankish/ old-germanic name for various places throughout Central Europe. Additionally, the town of Hagenau in the Alsace region had been a free imperial town, i. e. a town without any related local nobility "von Hagenau". On the other handside, there is a famous noble family, originally from Bavaria, but important enough to be found at a lot of places in the Southern part of the Holy Empire, including regions such as Burgundy in today's France, as well as today's countries Swizerland, Austria and Italy. Although Alsace region hab been repeatedly invaded by French troups and had been subject to massive ethnic cleansing/ implementation of French national occultism centuries later in order to annex the region, in the time of Gottfried, a nobleman like him definitely was free to live in the towns of Hagenau and Strassburg without permission of French authorities. --178.10.212.166 (talk) 16:57, 29 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
This is speculation, and maybe a bit tasteless, too ("French national occultism"). There is no reason to assume that he was not born in Haguenau, Alsace, which was a more important town in the Middle Ages than it is today. There is no proof that he was born there, either, but the name is rather unambiguous, and the fact that Gottfried would eventually settle nearby (Strasbourg is a very short distance away) may be a clue.--Edelseider (talk) 18:57, 29 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
As there is no proof where Gottfried's place of birth actually was, it is speculation to localize it at this very particular Hagenau, which is one out of dozens of towns, villages, castles and other sites with such name.
