Gordon VanWylen was Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan from 1965 through 1972. Prior to that he was Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Chairman of that Department. He was never associated worn the Department of Physics in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts.
