Date of birth

[edit]

Miller was on TSN radio Montreal [1] and said "It [Wikipedia] also says I was born in 1964. I wasn't." His date of birth is referenced, but I suspect the source is wrong.--SaskatchewanSenator (talk) 20:35, 19 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

That's a long radio clip to listen to. Do you know the approximate time he mentions his birthdate? As for the current source, it is the only one I can find with a birth date. Flibirigit (talk) 20:57, 19 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
14:45--SaskatchewanSenator (talk) 20:59, 19 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I will listen to it later when I get home. Assuming a correct date is mentioned, the birthdate can be updated and a footnote be added to the article explaining that Miller mentioned on radio that the IIHF source has the incorrect birthdate. Typically, the IIHF would be considered a reliable source, but mistakes can happen. Flibirigit (talk) 21:03, 19 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
He doesn't mention the correct date.--SaskatchewanSenator (talk) 21:13, 19 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That's unfortunate an exact date wasn't mentioned. He might be born in 1965 as per this edit. If there's an audio recording of that "Leafs lunch", we could cite that. Flibirigit (talk) 21:31, 19 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Leafs Lunch is available as a podcast: [2] Good luck finding that discussion; it's a two hour show every weekday.--SaskatchewanSenator (talk) 21:36, 19 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It might be the April 9, 2019 broadast if someone has the time to listen to it, and indicate the timestamp in the broadcast. It would be nice to have something verifiable other than word of mouth. Flibirigit (talk) 21:56, 19 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Miller was reported to be 44 years old as of February 26, 2010 [3] as per the New York Times. This would indicate born in 1965 or 1966. His place of birth was listed at Sundre, Alberta as of this edit, but no source was provided, and it was the only edit made by the IP address. The IIHF article currently cited lists his birth place as Edmonton. Flibirigit (talk) 22:15, 19 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@SaskatchewanSenator and Flibirigit:, I'm checking the podcast. It's a little frustrating that the IIHF supposedly got his birthdate wrong because it's usually a pretty reliable source. I am leaning towards just using the NY Times article for now until I listen to the podcast. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 23:26, 19 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hopefully something can be found that satisfies WP:SELFPUB, and is reliable. Does anyone have the ability to check his twitter account? Sorry, I am not able to. Flibirigit (talk) 23:57, 19 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I have access to his Twitter account, currently checking. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 00:12, 20 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Not hearing anything on the podcast related to his birthday. I'll give it a second listen later though.HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 01:23, 20 December 2019 (UTC) I didn't realize there was another podcast for hour 2, apologies. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 01:26, 20 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
This article says he was 14 in 1979, making his birth year 1965. However, we know his birthday is in June due to Tweets so he was likely born in June 1965HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 17:17, 20 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Being reported as 14 years old as of February 14, 1979, could mean he was born in 1964 or early 1965. Flibirigit (talk) 17:25, 20 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
He cites 1965 as his birth year per this tweet and this tweet. – Nurmsook! talk... 20:37, 20 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Nurmsook, I didn’t not see that on Twitter. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 20:45, 20 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
At the time the IIHF story was written, his birth year was showing as 1964 on this page. So I suspect that the IIHF used Wikipedia to get his birthdate, which was wrong to begin with, and therefore started this whole chain of errors. IIHF cites error on Wikipedia, then Wikipedia users cite erroneous IIHF article anytime someone tires to fix the birth year. – Nurmsook! talk... 20:51, 20 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It's good that we finally have something written by Miller and properly cited for the year 1965. Thanks to Nurmsook for digging. Let's hope the date June 21 and the city of Edmonton are correct too. Flibirigit (talk) 21:19, 20 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The date of June 21 is confirmed in those tweets as well (not to mention numerous others where people mention it's his birthday), and this article references that Gord Miller is a born-and-raised Edmontonian. – Nurmsook! talk... 22:52, 20 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Great! Nurmsook, could you incorporate that article into the references too? The more citations, the merrier! Thanks. Flibirigit (talk) 23:04, 20 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Birth place

[edit]

Miller's birth place is cited as Edmonton according to this archived IIHF article. I have seen multiple edits by IP contributors changing his birth place to Sundre, Alberta, but none of the changes were accompanied by a citation. There are multiple web site which state Miller was born in Sundre, but not that I can find pass WP:RS. In the discussion above regarding his birth date, it was shown that the IIHF had the year incorrect, so it is certainly possible for the birth place to be incorrect also. I have seen a Tweet from Miller that his boyhood home was in Sundre, but it did not specifically mention his birth place. If anyone could find a RS for his birth place, it would be appreciated. Thanks. Flibirigit (talk) 18:46, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Courtesy @SaskatchewanSenator, HickoryOughtShirt?4, and Nurmsook: who were involved in the previous discussion. Flibirigit (talk) 18:57, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I have found this 2013 clipping which says Sundre. I am looking for the original Ottawa Citizen article. Note, this article found by Nurmsook references that Miller is a born-and-raised Edmontonian. Flibirigit (talk) 19:00, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Search through some databases and found only the article that @Flibirigit: found above. It would be difficult to pass RS based on one article when so many more others state Edmonton. There are a few tweets out there from blue check marks stating Sundre as the hometown though. Keep in mind though, hometown and birthplace are two distinct things. – Nurmsook! talk... 19:11, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Are there more RS which state Edmonton as a birth place? I couldn't find any others. I understand that birth place and hometown are not the same thing. There appear to be RS for both Edmonton and Sundre as a birth place. One option might be to list his birth place simply as Alberta. Flibirigit (talk) 19:55, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Here's what I found for RS showing Edmonton as birthplace: [4], [5], [6] (worth noting these three articles have the same author), [7], [8], [9]. Another found in Canadian Newsstream database (no link) is: Spector, Mark, Miller's time comes of age with TSN, Edmonton Jounal, Nov 1, 1990, p. D3 - "He was born in Edmonton and graduated from Strathcona high school in 1982". I very much suspect this is a situation where Miller was born in Edmonton, spent part of his childhood in Sundre, and then at the very least was in Edmonton for his teenage years, but that's purely speculation. – Nurmsook! talk... 20:54, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the new sources found. I agree with your speculation that he was likely born in Edmonton, spent time in Sundre, then moved back to Edmonton. Of course, Miller could tweet something else tomorrow. Maybe next week I can put something like that into the article. Let's see if anyone else comments. Flibirigit (talk) 00:31, 28 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I hope to get around to making updates to this article next week. Cheers. Flibirigit (talk) 19:14, 16 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It is the age of twitter, you could just send him a tweet asking him to clarify. He might not answer but you never know. We have clarified birth locations through contacting subjects before. -DJSasso (talk) 13:59, 19 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
