Merge

[edit]
The following discussion is closed and will soon be archived: Merged

I strongly believe that this title should be redirected to Boherbue. And any content (not already covered in the Boherbue article) moved there.

I believe/suggest this because the subject of this article, Gneeves (Boherbue), is one of two townlands on which the small village of Boherbue sits. (Namely: Gneeves, a townland of a half-square mile. And Laharan West, a townland of less than a third of a square mile.) In addition to the nearly coterminous geographic overlap between the two articles, there is significant content overlap between the two. In fact, other than the content which explains where the townland sits relative to the village, nearly 100% of the content then deals entirely with amenities within the village.

As such, effectively all of the WP:MERGEREASONs apply. The geographic scope is effectively the same (meeting "duplicate"). It is not possible to give context to one without the other (meeting "context"). And the content overlap is, and likely always will be, approaching 100% (meeting "overlap").

In short, where a townland and a town are effectively coterminous, we do not need articles covering each.

Unless there are other thoughts (or suggestions on how to address this), I'll complete a merge/redirect in the coming days or weeks. Guliolopez (talk) 01:35, 9 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps I should let out things that are literally next to the village and concentrate further back in the area that isn't in the village? — Preceding unsigned comment added by DuhallowContributor (talkcontribs) 15:51, 9 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi DuhallowContributor. My first thought is that I'm not sure how that would work. Given that, of the total 400 or so acres of the townland, upwards of 200 acres are taken up by the "urban" area of the village. And, of the "rural" 200 acres or so, there are only a relatively small number of houses and farms. And a few of the archaeological/RMP sites that are listed. In any other town or village article, the stuff in the immediate hinterland is covered in the town/village article. (Like the Mallow article for example. Which talks about Cork Racecourse Mallow. Even though, technically, it is outside the town.) It just doesn't realistically make sense to have geo articles like this with such a very granular scope. (FYI. And just to be clear. Articles on other rural townlands, like Loumanagh, can likely stand on their own. As they do not significantly overlap with other/existing articles. I just don't see that this is the case for Gneeves (Boherbue)). If you want to expand on your proposal a little (to explain, in a practical/actual sense what you mean by "concentrate further back in the area") then happy to discuss how that might address the concern. Relative to the guideline. Guliolopez (talk) 19:17, 9 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, I could write up the history of it as I'm historian, but unfortunately I can't back it up with sources as it is not online, if you think they should merge then go ahead with it — Preceding unsigned comment added by DuhallowContributor (talkcontribs) 19:56, 9 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hiya.
RE: Online. Other editors need to be able to verify sources. Sources don't have to be online to be verifiable. Sources just have to be published.
RE: Merge. Other editors may yet have thoughts/suggestions. So I'll hold off for a bit. If nobody else chimes in, then (yes) I'll go ahead.
Cheers. Guliolopez (talk) 20:58, 9 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Resolved. Based on the above, I have gone ahead and completed the merge/redirect. Closing thread. Guliolopez (talk) 02:23, 17 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
