Glossitis and atrophic glossitis?
[edit]How much do we need separate articles for these? All the sources I am looking at for glossitis are treating it as near synonymous with atrohpic glossitis. Even more strangely, atrophic glossitis is not mentioned specifically on this page, even though it is described by sontent like "smooth tongue" etc. Who ever wrote this page before has defined glossitis as "inflammation/swelling of the tongue" whereas a quick search on PubMed with filters reviews and last 5 years activates shows that the term glossitis is treated in most publicaitons as a synonym of atrohpic glossitis. Since Atrophic glossitis just a 2 line stub with all the causes already covered in this main glossitis page, I'm going to merge them together, keeping only the synonyms. Essentially, I do not think atrophic glossitis is clearly enough separated as a topic from glossitis to warrant its own page. Lesion (talk) 23:20, 21 July 2013 (UTC)
- I see what has happened. The article was reworked a while back to be based on what is now medline plus ... [1]. This page seems to be talking about tongue swelling, where as most glossitis causes minimal size increase in the tongue, and only changes the appearance of the tongue. There is no need to remove this content, since it could be argued that gloss + itis = tongue inflammation, and swelling is one of the cardinal signs of (acute) inflammation, but I think a process of adding better sources which use the term glossitis in its normal sense will help the article.
