"[P]ieces like String Quartet No. 3, 4 that are composed in the 1970s, are rather experimental and unusual for that era[.]" That's an empty phrase. By 1970, Western art music had come to include virtually every possible sound. There was serial music, stochastic music, aleatoric music, musique concrète, electronic noise compositions - and Coates' string quartets with tone clusters and glissandi were "ahead of her time"? This entry seems like a pure puff-piece and may set a new record in pseudo-intellectual pretentiousness as well. I hope somebody with a good knowledge of Coates' music will set things aright. Opus131 (talk) 07:21, 30 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Her date of birth is given as 1938-10-10 in all major works of reference like Grove, MGG or KDG Komponisten der Gegenwart (via Munzinger). And what's more, it is the date that was indicated on her own website (available at the Internet Archive). Isn't it a bit premature to change the YOB based on one single blogpost? Yes, I have read the information is her daughter's opinion, but what if she is in error? Gloria Coates is dead now and can no longer object. Wouldn't it be a good idea to dig a bit deeper first and inquire this more thoroughly? FordPrefect42 (talk) 22:07, 20 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think that whilst there is uncertainty both dates should be included with an explanatory note. I tried to add such a note, but someone else removed it, although I see a different note has now been added. Round about the time of her "official" 80th birthday there was speculation that she was actually older than that, so I suspect the daughter's claim is correct. Difficult to find any documentation that could be used as a source here though. --188.28.130.129 (talk) 10:08, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This talk is for all to understand, - next time you want to have something changed, please provide context, such as a diff, or a copy of the sentence. I also have a bad memory ;) - I think I know what you meant, though, and tried it differently, please check if that works for you. - I am grateful for grammar help, not being a native speaker. - I removed the link to immigration, firstly because there's no such article, but secondly also because we don't know if she planned to immigrate then already, or rather planned to return after the studies she wanted to pursue in Europe. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:20, 29 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Apart from a laudatory comment about Coates being a master of the microtone, and a mention of her using quartertones, there's nothing to describe the different tunings she used, nor any theory that she may have espoused about choosing a specific tuning. Readers interested in microtonality will want to know more. Does anyone have some relevant sources? yoyo (talk) 07:41, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
