Climate Table
[edit]While this table has the title of Baker Lake, the data is different from the Baker Lake data. I suspect it is actually for Gjoa Haven. Unfortunately, I lack time to verify this. Fortran (talk) 18:31, 21 January 2014 (UTC)

Etymology needs sources (and work more generally)
[edit]How do you get Gjøa from a 'compressed compound form of Guðafriðr'? Moreover, that name is effectively limited to West Germanic. In ON, there is no attested cognate for NHG Gottfried, NE Godfrey. The name/word Gyða is not attested in ON, and even if it were, it wouldn't have come from Guðfriðr since it's got i-mutation of the root vowel but Guðfriðr doesn't. You can't just apocopate the entire final part of a compound and call it a day. If the person who wrote the etymology could show some sources, it would be great. Otherwise, check:
Zoega (1910) A Concise Dictionary of Old Icelandic. Oxford University Press.
Gordon and Taylor (1957). An Introduction to Old Norse. 2nd ed. Oxford University Press.
Vries, Jan de (1977) Altnordisches Etymologisches Wörterbuch. 3rd ed. Leiden Brill.
Etc. etc. where you'll find not a single attestation of Gyða... This part should be entirely removed until the author can back it up with something. It's disingenuous otherwise and I think there's probably a good reason there's no source listed.
Edited to add: Wait wait, it gets even worse. Friðr is 'peace, protection', not 'beauty'!! Beautiful is 'fagr' in ON, cf. NE fair. The alleged Guðfriðr doesn't even have the Bindungsvokal; it wouldn't have been syncopated in ON and should still be there. Who wrote this?!

- I'm unclear on what the problem is. Gjoa Haven is named for the Gjøa which sheltered here. As to how the ship's name came to be is immaterial to this article and has been removed.
- Could you explain the acronyms? ON = Ontario, NHG = ?, NE = northeast but that doesn't make any sense. CambridgeBayWeather (solidly non-human), Uqaqtuq (talk), Huliva 17:37, 10 June 2024 (UTC)
