Giya or Gia?

[edit]

Re this page move: In my experience it's always been Giya, but I'm no Kancheliomane so it may be more often seen as Gia. Maybe we need to discuss this to get some consensus. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 08:58, 2 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Per WP:UCN, this page should be moved back to "Giya Kancheli". Toccata quarta (talk) 09:15, 2 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Because his name is Gia not Giya. GeorgianJorjadze 13:02, 2 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
According to whom? You?
How come Giya appears wherever one cares to look?
For reference, Google produces these results:
He is a Georgian composer and his name is Giorgi or shortly Gia. Giya is a russified name where Russians are using ya on ia endings. For example surname Alasania in Russian it is Alasanya so what do you want to say that we must change it to YA as well? Gia is a correct form and google searches does not mean anything in this case. Again, GeorgianJorjadze, you're using yourself as the authority here. No offence, but that just won't do. Please provide some independent verification that every single one of those 176,000 google hits is incorrectly spelt. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 04:36, 4 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I am saying that this person is Georgian, born in Georgia and his name is Gia not Giya. His name as Giya was used through Russian sources and that is why. His name is Gia (გია). georgianJORJADZE 12:46, 4 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've moved the page back to "Giya Kancheli" as this is the spelling normally used in English language contexts. --Deskford (talk) 19:11, 26 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you.
To me, "Giya" is the normal and familiar spelling out in the real world.

As mentioned almost seven years ago, the name of the article is in line with WP:UCN. Please refrain from personal attacks involving accusations of illiteracy. Thank you. Toccata quarta (talk) 21:01, 5 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
