  • Post-war story papers seem rare both physically and digitally, I'm guessing through falling circulations and not being as collectible as the grandees that had a following by the forties and fifties, so I have been unable to find any Crystals close to the change-over to the comic; I'd be fascinated to find out which - if any - features were continued or if the comic launch was an all-new line-up.
  • I would love to also do a big list of story paper stories but I'm wary of going on a deep dive into story papers while I'm trying to expand the comics pages; regardless I feel two separate pages would be warranted to avoid having to mention whether GC was a comic or story paper at the time for each, and also just for the size. Didn't see the point for throwing in a redlink for something I personally am unlikely to write any time soon, though naturally if anyone else wants to do a list that would be superb!
  • http://www.philsp.com/data/data233.html#GIRLSCRYSTAL lists "C. Eaton Fearn (who also wrote fiction for the paper as Gail Western)" as editor... is this before or after Eves, or is it an assistant editor post?
  • Anyone know why the text stories were credited for so long, albeit as pen names, and the strips weren't? IIRC it's been theorised that Lion carried writer credits for some early strips to make the comic seem more 'respectable' (hence all the 'E.G. Cowan' stuff) but it's weird that the girls' comics never bothered with that and at the same time kept credit for the text stories... some sort of bizarre contractual hangover from the story paper days?
  • I've removed the link to the scans at Comic Plus. While I believe Comic Plus is operating in good faith, British public domain law is - I believe - quite different, and I'm not sure any AP/FW/IPC material is in the PD as there's a clear line of ownership (compared to the likes of Swan, Miller etc. who went out of business). I am open to correction here, though I feel as anyone that interested can mash "Girls Crystal scans" into Google and get options it's inessential anyway.
