I'll review this. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 22:28, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks. Chiswick Chap (talk) 23:42, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Earwig finds no issues. Researchgate is not reliable but it's only hosting a paper here.

  • Noted.
  • As you say below, the image is of good quality and helpful to readers.
  • File:Smaug par David Demaret.jpg -- same question. Both are quite good, but I don't think we should rely on our judgement for what can be included.
    • Again, a well-drawn image, and one that fits well with the cited caption about Gimli and the dragon's golden hoard.
Yes, but I don't think that's sufficient for inclusion. I think we could include anything discussed, even tangentially, in a secondary source; or if there are reliable sources discussing fan art of Tolkien we might be able to include these even if the source didn't mention these artists or images, so long as something about the images was clearly relevant to the discussion. But as a tertiary source I don't think we should be deciding that these are suitable. It's not like, say, a diagram of a device or electrical circuit or building layout, where we can create our own images to help the reader. • Removed the dragon; I've found a good source (Fimi 2011) for how Tolkien is moving into folklore in fan's minds, and from book to film-based images as they write, draw, and all the rest. I'll see if I can find any more after the GAN.
  • Fixed.
  • What makes the following reliable sources?
    • videodetective.com
      • Cast lists for 1993 Finnish TV series are not numerous; IMdB is not better. The source is used for the bare fact of the casting, and it's certainly correct in this case.
    • theonering.net -- seems to be a fan community
      • It's being used only for the bare but not easily-verified fact of casting in long-ago productions, and again the claims are certainly correct here.
Yes, I have no reason to doubt either fact, but this is unreliable for the same reason IMDB is unreliable; any given fact on IMDB can be quite wrong, even though almost every fact on IMDB is right, since IMDB is edited by fans, not professionals. I think videodetective might be reliable but I was unable to find enough information to prove it. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 10:49, 14 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • All right, removed.
  • The chandos.net citation seems to be to a CD sleeve. I would change the citation so that's explicit, so that the URL is just the link to the PDF, rather than appearing to be the source.
  • Done.
  • "the company was sundered, for Boromir, son of the Steward of Gondor, tried to take the Ring and use it against Sauron": a little too much of Tolkien's occasionally archaic diction is creeping in here. A couple of other examples: "spoke ill of", "again Aragorn brought calm", "Gimli fought, too, in the final battle".
  • Forsooth! Edited.
  • You might mention that Gimli does indeed take Leglolas on the promised tour of the caves.
  • Added and cited.

Spotchecks:

  • FN 3 cites "The scholars of international relations Abigail Ruane and Patrick James view Gimli as an exemplar of "neoliberal institutionalists", since his "people avidly pursue gold and treasure"." Verified.
  • Noted.
  • FN 5 cites "The Tolkien scholar John Miller writes that like the Elves, the Dwarves have withdrawn from history and become subject to "an increased aesthetic sensibility"". Verified.
  • Noted.
