Origins of the surname Gillespie
[edit]Gillespie is a Scottish family surname, thought to be from the Gaelic Gilleasbuig, which means "servant of the Bishopry". The Gillespie family were from the Strathspey area in northern Scotland, and are a sept of the clan McPherson, who are descendents of the ancient Pictish Chattan clan,(Chattan: "the league of the cat" ). The family's motto is "Tu certa salutis anchora".
A family of the same name also emerged in Ireland, where the name is less common, but the two families are beleived to be unrelated.

[edit]Splitting off surname
[edit]This page has turned into a DAB/surname mix, so I am splitting off the text at the top and the names to a new article, Gillespie (surname). Leschnei (talk) 02:18, 29 November 2018 (UTC)
