Gervonta Davis is a one-division champion

[edit]

Hi guys, a while ago I edited this article so as to read that Gervonta Davis is a one-divison champion, as he is. He is a champion in the super-featherweight division, where has held, at separate times, held the IBF and (Super) WBA belts. However, at both featherweight and lightweight, Davis has held only the (Regular) WBA belt, which is, in contradistinction to the (Super) WBA belt, NOT a world title. The holder of the (Super) WBA belt in that division is the corresponding champion of that division. But Davis never held the (Suepr) WBA belt in these divisions, nor any of the other belts, and hence was never world champion at these divisions. Thus, he is a one-division champion.

I understand this is confusing, as Davis is often introduced by announcers and referred to by broadcasting networks as a 3-division champion, but this is just a marketing ploy - these same broadcasting networks have also erroneously labelled Teofimo Lopez an undisputed champion of the 4-belt era. Wikipedia shouldn't serve as an extension of these underhand marketing campaigns used to promote Davis - it should be impartial. Davis is a one-division champion. 31.94.20.145 (talk) 17:35, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I got the divisions mixed up - Davis has never fought at featherweight. Davis was a champ at super-featherweight, but never at lightweight or light welterweight. However, my overall point stands - Davis only held the (Regular) WBA belt at the divisions north of super-feather. 31.94.20.145 (talk) 18:23, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

why do you guys keep calling gervonta davis a multiple weight champion?

[edit]

gervonta davis has only held the ibf title and wba title at 130. stop falling for the false marketing ploy showtime has done. if gervonta davis was champ at 135 and 140, how were josh taylor and devin haney undisputed? 2601:98A:A01:9F20:39F9:BD17:78A2:1EE7 (talk) 01:50, 27 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It's not Wikipedia's task to figure it out. Mainstream publications all refer to his WBA Regular belts at 135 as 140 as legitimate. Unfortunately that's the hand we're dealt with. Mac Dreamstate (talk) 14:28, 27 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
its not wikipedias task. but let the people who know boxing tell it then. the mainstream calls him a 3 division champion as a marketing ploy. not because its the truth. tank davis has only held 2 titles and that was super wba champ at 130 and ibf champ at 130. 2601:98A:A01:9F20:806E:3E2A:A616:90DE (talk) 20:30, 27 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

He’s name is abdul wahid and also known as gervonta davis* 154.176.34.217 (talk) 03:56, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

That is already reflected in the article. —C.Fred (talk) 03:58, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Article mis-states his amateur record

[edit]

Cited article from The Ring says "Amateur record: 206-15", not 221-5. See here.

That's a pretty huge difference of ten more losses, and probably it would be better if the article included the accurate stat, rather than a made-up one. At least we get the number of his amateur fights right.

Hopefully someone who is allowed to edit the article can fix this. 24.47.52.7 (talk) 17:03, 16 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
