Dreadful article

I must say, this is one of the worst articles in all of Wikipedia. It's a list of dot points and hyperlinks to articles about broad movements in literature, with no explanation of how they relate to German literature. This isn't my area but it blows my mind that Swedish Literature contains so much more useful information than this article does. Colonel Mustard (talk) 03:10, 20 March 2011 (UTC)

I second this. Would it be worthwhile to organize it differently, or have sections or even separate articles for different genres? An entry on German poetry would certainly warrant its own article, and then we could link to other articles that are currently orphans, such as Brecht's poetry. I somewhat agree. This is a mere outline. And, it says too little about the decline of German Kultur - in the world's estimation, and actual quality, since the period of National Socialism, and that movement's ideological persistence among too many sympathizers, even as late as 2013. Perhaps Germany needed the contributions of German-speaking Jews more than is suspected. I predict that it will take centuries, if at all, before German Kultur again reaches the level of Beethoven. I can't agree more. This article lacks substance, simply a list of periods with no information on how those periods relate to the topic at hand. Definitely needs a thorough rewriting. Particularly relating to the period just before Hitler's rise to power, though not in any way restricted thereunto. Works should also be named. Philologick (talk) 05:38, 17 January 2016 (UTC)

WPG importance

I don't want to change a recent assessment unilaterally, but this is definitely more than mid-importance according to Wikiproject Germany's own importance scale. I would rank this as at least high importance - my own preference would be for Top importance. If the Economy of Germany is top importance, as is Bach, it doesn't make sense to me *not* to include German literature in this ranking, especially because of the historical importance of its various literary traditions for German philosophy, culture, and politics. Literature in this case is a large, diachronic category with a huge scope and significance, whereas the economy article only spans the mid-20th century to the present. What are others' thoughts? Literary Figures

I think we should add an important literary figures subsection for each century. This highlights which authors made that specific century of German Literature what it was. To start off, I added Franz Kafka to the important literary figures and how his writing style came to be. I can also discuss more of his legacy, and his and other german literary figures' significance in current literature. Perhaps some more writers to be included can be Bertolt Brecht, Walter Benjamin, and Hans Fallada. These three writers, in particular, have quite a significant connection in their writing and German roots. Furthermore, I believe that we can also add other works of writing along with including how literature shifted from before the war to a more melancholic state. The article should also include a discussion of Nobel Prize Winner Gunter Grass, a German writer whose works changed the concept of German Literature.

Rename

This article should be renamed "German language literature" to distinguish it from the literature of Germany which is not all in German anyway.-MacRùsgail (talk) 11:12, 30 March 2014 (UTC)

English titles

Is it acceptable or not to include English titles in parentheses for each German novel, on each author page? The author pages regularly have the German title, which I cannot read. Am I missing something?

I literally just created an account on here, just to post this. How can you have a "definitive article" about German literature that fails to mention Nietzsche? What am I missing? JimCGoodfellas (talk) 07:06, 26 October 2020 (UTC)

Early New High German literature

I've started a new article for Early New High German literature, which includes the material from German_literature#Early_Modern_period. Early Modern German literature now redirects to the new article.

No substantial content yet, not even a proper intro - just a bibliography and basic list of authors/works. I'm not an expert in the period, so any help would be useful. --Pfold (talk) 18:16, 25 January 2021 (UTC)
