[edit]

The assertion that Gerard Slevin designed the European flag is not supported by the detailed archive maintained by the Council of Europe in Strasbourg on the tortous process of designing the European flag. It appears from this dossier that while Mr.Slevin was a member of a committee brought in at a late stage to advise on various design problems he was not the only contributor to the deliberation and the Council of Europe identifies other individuals as having a more decisive influence on the finished product.

It can now be confirmed that the claim that Irish Chief Herald Chief Slevin designed the European Flag is untrue. Slevin played a role in the process of selecting a design, but it was a relatively late and minor one. See sourced account at http://homepage.eircom.net/~seanjmurphy/chiefs/euroflagmemo.html Sean Murphy, 10 December 2005

The main page needs amendment as follows:

The reference should be to Tony Mc Carthy not Tom McCarthy.

The suggestion in the main article that his role may never be resolved needs to be modified to a suggestion that claims that he was the designer of the European flag are not correct and that while he expressed an opinion in favour of a design similar to that which eventually was adopted he was not its creator nor had he a decisive role in its final acceptance by the Council of Europe.
