Table of Contents
[edit]Medium-length biographies like this one benefit from subsections (subheaders without horizontal lines) but voila, suddenly there is a wasteful table of contents. --P64 05:06, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

Cricket
[edit]I've added Wright to Category:American cricketers (note that the cat name is not "United States cricketers"), but thought a brief explanation might be in order for those unfamiliar with cricket. Here is CricketArchive's statistical summary of Wright; as you can see, he played twice in first-class cricket - those games were both for USA v Gentlemen of Philadelphia, in 1883 and 1884.
I'm not very familiar with baseball, so am not certain how "Major League Baseball" applies to players of Wright's era, but then the term "first-class cricket" was only specifically defined in 1947, so I'm going by the fact that he's categorised as an MLB player. The reason that matters is that to have played both MLB and f-c cricket is exceptionally unusual; I'm not sure whether Wright is unique in that regard, but it's certainly notable!
There really ought to be a few words in the main text mentioning Wright's cricketing feats, but it's tricky to know where to put them given that he played his first-class matches after he'd retired from baseball. Loganberry (Talk) 02:40, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
- It appears to me that a new section name something like "Post-Major League career" can be created, using a portion of the "New England" section. Much of it includes post-career activities. He and his brother Harry Wright were major cricketers before turning to baseball, i think I read that they were considered two of the top players in the U.S. at that time, pre-1869. I'd actually love to redo this article, and attempt to upgrade to GA or FA, just can't find the time though.Neonblak talk - 03:49, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, you're right; not being familiar with this family, I only noticed George as he was the only one who played first-class cricket. Mind you, he played significant (but not first-class) cricket from 1862 to 1894 - for example, he played for USA v Canada in 1865, and for Massachussetts v Australians in 1893 - so his cricket career extended either side of his MLB career. Also, I've also added George to Category:Cricket umpires, since he stood in two first-class games in 1885 and 1886 (see here). The more I find out about this guy, the more interesting he seems! - Came here having read, randomly, a user comment on a BBC cricket page. I guess that to an American editor George Wright is no doubt a baseball hero but he seems to have spent his career playing maybe as much cricket. Something of a hidden history today, it would be nice to hear more about it. Maybe the cricket part could be more structured in the article. Hakluyt bean (talk) 14:07, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

under the section "Baseball Legacy" it states, "Wright lived long enough to be consulted regarding the baseball centennial celebrations of 1939...", yet the date of death is listed as "Died: August 21, 1937 (aged 90)" Winthrop62 (talk) 20:25, 6 December 2011 (UTC)
