[edit]I've added material and some citations from a 57-page biography of Johnson found in the book "Lost Sounds" by Tim Brooks. The only citation was regarding the 1900 Census, and the only reference was this Earthlink article. The book by Brooks rebuts some of the Earthlink material, as well as other uncited statements in the article. Johnson is an important figure, and reliable material on his life is hard to find. So I've made bold edits in favor of the more authoritative source where they disagree, or where a statement is unsourced, and cited all these points. If anyone has references to the contrary, I would welcome a conversation here so we can get it right. Some uncited items removed from the article include:
- "Around 1885 he married a woman called Annie."- no record of marriage, and the name of his first common-law wife ("the German woman") is not recorded. She also died in late 1894 or early 1895.
- His discovery by Thomas Edison - two other record company representatives hired him first.
- "Born into slavery on a plantation" - neither item is clear.
- Conflation of Len Spencer's office (called the Lyceum) on West 28th Street where Johnson worked and lived, with the Lyceum Theatre (Broadway) on West 45th Street. They are different buildings.
