Rugby league player?
[edit]Although the Newport RFC website state that Thomas played league, this is probably doubtful. The Northern code started up in 1907, which would have made Thomas over 50, also the GB team didn't play until 1908. It would be unlikely that a professional team would pay for a 50 year old player, so it should be assumed that Thomas played for Warrington while they were still a union team.
- It started in 1895 actually. You have a good point though about a 50 year old international, it could do with checking out. LunarLander // talk // 12:16, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
- OK, the Newport site states that Thomas played with them from 1884 until 1892. The Warrington Wolves History page states that he joined them in August 1903 - from Newport. This is a gap of 11 years. In the Who's Who of Welsh rugby, it states that Thomas was a professional sprinter, but no mention of him 'Going North'; his athletics credentials are repeated in the book 'All Blacks in Wales', but nothing about league. I'll keep looking. FruitMonkey (talk) 13:52, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
- We've also got him down as a scoring 539 points over his career and scoring 33 points in a single match in 1909, against St Helens, ..at the age of 52. This guy would be a legend of the game if this was true. FruitMonkey (talk) 13:59, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
- George Thomas (Warrington) played second row forward, George Thomas (Newport) was a centre / wing. Welsh wings were very slight back then. FruitMonkey (talk) 14:06, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
- Got it. Different guy. This George Thomas dies in 1934, the league George Thomas [died fighting in the Somme]. Can we seperate them now? FruitMonkey (talk) 14:08, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
