early notes
[edit]I would like to change the title to archive rather than database but don't know how. Art to Tech (talk) 21:22, 23 May 2021 (UTC)
I started reading the help page about categories and found it difficult to follow. I just wanted simple steps on how to add a category box at the bottom of the page. Art to Tech (talk) 22:32, 23 May 2021 (UTC)
- @Art to Tech: To change a page's title, you need to "move" the page (from one title to another). It's an odd usage of the term "move," but that's how wiki software refers to it. Go to the article's page, then look for a tab at the top that says "More" -- it should have an item in it for "Move." Change the title there, and give a reason.
- While it's easy to do, and things will generally stay well organized by the automatic creation of redirects, it's good to avoid doing too many "page moves" for an article. So with that in mind, I'd suggest (1) that you use a lower case "archive" (unless the word is part of the formal title) and (2) before making the move -- and you may have already done this -- ensure that the word "archive" rather than "database" is the one more frequently used (or at least, with similar frequency) to the word "database" in coverage of the topic. (3) This is already covered, but it's definitely good practice to bring up a proposed page move / title change on the article's talk page like you did here, so people have a day or so to weigh in if they have a different idea; even if you didn't need help, it's a good thing to do. With that said...go to it! (There are restrictions on page moves for very new accounts, but I'm pretty sure you'll have no trouble; let me know if you do.)
- For your second question,
here's a video I made a while back on how to use the "Cat-a-lot" tool to add categories. Hope this helps -- happy to answer questions if needed. It's a video I'd like to redo some day, so feedback is especially welcome.-Pete Forsyth (talk) 19:28, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- Oops, I got crossed up there -- while you might find Cat-a-lot interesting, it's really more appropriate to Wikimedia Commons (and organizing photos etc.) The tool I was thinking of is HotCat. Maybe that page will help; if not, I'm happy to put together a more in-depth answer in the next day or two. -Pete Forsyth (talk) 19:32, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you, I had a quick look and will look again soon. Art to Tech (talk) 06:50, 25 May 2021 (UTC)
